CPU Fan question

Hola, just need a bit of help plz :)

ive got a duron 1ghz cpu running at 1.15, with a pal 8045 hs and a delta 80 mm fan, but the fan is overkill and makes a racket to boot, so ive got me a low noise 20cfm fan to stick on instead, i just want to make sure it wont overheat or fry anything? will i be ok?

thnx for any help, kempy.

as long as the board has a temp sensor and can monitor cpu temperatures fit the fan and sit in the bios in the hardware monitor and watch those temperatures... if all is well go into windows and get MBM running and try firing a few things up for 3-5 minutes at a time - if temps are still safe loop the sandra burn in wizard a couple of times and check temps...

if it doesn't fall over there it won't likely do so at all... if you see the slightest indication of it heading towards the 70C mark then I'd consider getting a couple of nidec gamma fans and giving that a whirl, you'll get 30CFM+ with little or no noise, but be warned they need a lot of clearance above the HSF to fit properly.

Sounds like it should be fine, like xav says though keep an eye on the temps.

Just as an example I changed my taisol with 5000 rpm fan for an all copper thermaltake volcano 7+ jobby, and I run the fan on the lowest setting to avoid noise (3500rpm i believe). Even with the slower fan speed the temperature dropped 10C, so i guess it shows the fan isnt anywhere near as important as the quality of the heatsink (or what its made of). Putting a smaller fan on the sink to avoid noise should be fine i think... depends on a few factors, mainly how hot it was running before hand etc... You be the judge and just be careful!

Your fan can be disconnected and the chip will survive perfectly for a fairly long period of time, then again if the heatsink falls off it doesnt really matter if the fan is going round or not does it... :]

heh well all seems to be working fine, thnx for the replies :)

with the delta fan on its was at stupid temps like 30 degrees :)

now I can barely hear the fan and its sitting around 40

thnx again, Kempy

I've only oced a little due to average memory. It performs a little better than an Alpha with a delta fan but without all the noise.

ahh...ok...I get it...its the noise thing. Aren't they rather bulky tho....as I understand the main unit probably wouldnt fit in your case ?
