CPU Cleaning?

I'm about to change my HSU. The old HSU had a thermal pad, I believe that these are made of a parrafin wax material that melts when hot to fill the gaps. What should I use to clean the CPU (athy) of the old gunk? I was thinking acetone as I read that will clean HSUs.

I got some cleaning paste from one of the oc stores. It looks like gunk itself but it works wonders

the best thing you can use to remove any thermal goop are cellulose thinners... try your local b&q or homebase

there is a cleaner made by harry monk enterprises that is available almost anywhere.its a bit sticky but wipes up a treat!

Overclockers also suggested cellulose. Got to be better than metal polish and a brillo pad

AKA, Propanol - tape head cleaner.

cleans 'em up nicely (as in disolves the buggers! don't do it!)

cellulose thinners are the basis for most tims and thermal goo, other alcohols will work but cellulose thinners are complex enough to not dissolve anything you want to keep

with the old T'Birds being ceramic you can use nearly any sort of "cleaning" fluid - with a bit of common sense.
The XP's being made mostly of fiberglass, you have to be more careful with the cleaning fluid of choice.
Acetone (AKA nail varnish remover) is a big no no as it is a ketone, not an alcohol and a dam good organic solvent.

If your just cleaning up the bottom of the HSF unit then make sure its dry and free from a residues left over before placing it back on the CPU

well if we're going to get technical...

actone=dimethyl ketone or 2-propanone - (CH3)CO(CH3)

and it behaves much like alcohols like ethanol for the purposes of removing thermal goo, which is all we're talking about here...

as to the core of the XP they wont dissolve in the thinners as the outer surface is a pretty tough polymer...
