I get from reading that, that you should be able to buy a basic version for maybe 19.99 that you can't play mp with. Then it'll cost you the usual 34.99 for the full mp compatible version, (less online no doubt). But when they release official mods and addons, (Blue Shift, Opposing Forces, CS Retail style) you'll have to go to the shop and buy them, another 19.99 each, or whatever.

If you are a steam subscriber however at $9.95 a month, these extra mods will be included in it.

I'm pretty sure that valve can't charge you to play someone elses mod, beyond making you pay a bit more for the mp compatible initial product, so i don't figure that community made mods are going to cost anything.

But nowhere has there been a suggestion that people pay in the store and then pay a monthly fee on top of that a la the MMORPG.

That seems to pretty much lay that one to bed too.

Seems a pretty straightforward arrangement really, allows them to keep cashing in on expansion packs a la EA's Sims, or BF1942 Road to Rome / Secret weapons etc, while encouraging people with the connection for it to sign up to steam.

The only controversy looks to be the release date, but all you cup is half full people will still insist on 30th Sept :D

Okay back to the subject. We will have to pay in some way or another for playing the official mods. This means tf2 and CS2. As neither will be ready at the time of release, we will have to extra for them or pay the subscription.

Bring on a CS clone for free.

CS2 !!!

They've only just decided to make us all pay for Condition Zero, or rather they will, if it ever comes out. Ok so I can see the financial benifits to P2P on games like MP HL2 but where does that leave GSP's like Game ? We already pay to subscribe to this service, does this mean that I'm going to have to pay Valve and Game to play MP HL2 ?

I honestly think that Valve will further alienate themselves from the gameing community if they continue down this road, I mean who here isn't already pi##ed off with waiting for titles like CS:CZ and HL2 ?

Whatever happens I'll still only be able to pay for 1 service like most peeps.

I could wait .... for ever for CS:CZ, or save the hassle and cancel it ;)

Everyone is shouting a screaming in typical HL MP way "OMGS!!! PAY 2 PLAY HL2!!! VALVE SUCKS!" From present information it is not going ot be like say Game.net. You will just pay a one off when the games/mods are released or pay a monthly sub to steam to download them.

Don't get me wrong Deadman, I'm not slagging off Valve here as I've said I understand the financial benifits of doing things this way but as with most business, schemes like this aren't overly popular with the customers.

The only thing thats realy getting up my nose about this whole HL2, CS:CZ and Steam thing is that Valve have said that HL2 will be ready on the 30th of September, its Vivendi and their tie up with ATI thats causing a problem with release.

Any hoo, I'll still be here, if I live that long.

From what i gather they have the whole Optimised for.... <Insert gfx card make here> and ati are getting a tad arsey about how optimised it actually is.

I will probably end up getting the hl2/ATi bundle, unless it forces down the prices of other ati cards significantly

*assuming ati will unviel a new card with HL2

Ive only just bought HL after all this time and then only a month left to play without paying for it ... I think its a rip off having to pay a monthly sub to just play HL.

thats just me though .... back to Medal of Honor & Battlefield.

Anyone feel the same or arent that bothered .. 9 bucks aint alot i know but the principle matters.

You don't have to pay a monthly sub, it's just one method to pay for it, if you want you can go out and buy HL2 and any mods they commercially release in a shop for a one off payment each time and still play them as much as u like on steam

obviously someone cant read:)
you do NOT have to pay on a monthly basis to play the games online
you can pay for steam IF you want to the extra content, but can continue to play online WITHOUT it.
