Cordless Mice

The computer fair returned to town today after a few months of absence so I did a bit of shopping.

I picked up some CD's for Lou and some 80mm fan grills to protect my lil digits. I also got myself a cordless optical mouse. One of these from Memorex and it only cost me 15 quid.

I've not been using it long but it's a little different from my failing MS Optical.

The thing I was wondering was what's the range on these things meant to be, I mean on cordless mice in general. It seems to only have a range of about a metre. Which is perfectly fine when you're sat at your desk with it but, my PC's in the lounge, and I was hoping to use the mouse sat on my sofa so I could fart about with the pc usjng the TV i.e. for playing movies or loading games (that I would use a joypad for).

What sort of range do the more expensive mice tend to have?

MY MX700 will give me 3-4 meters I think. The only time I ever take it away from the PC is to use it as a remote control for DVDs - which is handy :)

From a purely theoretical point of view, the further away from the reciever you get the more lag you'll have, and not knowing anything of Memorex wireless reputation (not likely a good thing) I don't know how acurate it will be as it is.

To be honest, I don't think that range increases much with more expensive models. The main demand is for the accuracy of the mouse, and - to the best of my knowledge and experience - that is what you pay for.

It seems to have different ranges at different times. I can seemingly use it on the sofa but if I move it further out of range it is then jerky when I bring it back to where it was working before and I need to put it back on the desk within about a half metre range before it functions smoothly.

So it kind of works at range, and kind of doesn't. heh.

Yeah, I've got one of those, the 'gyration ultra' - about 100m on the presenter model. 25m on the consumer.
