cooling issues

right I've got the final spec for my poota I'm building:

pcspec.jpg

i'm worried the only cooling i've got in there is the case fan + the provided heatsink n' fan with the athlon processor....

now there's a 7200rpm HDD, 1.6ghtz proc and a pretty hot GFX card and stuff......

I know FA when it comes to cooling but that sounds like I'm gonna come home and find my house has burned down... will that do fine? do i need a more expensive case ? if so any suggestions... do i need one of those OTES things on me GFX card ?

any help appreciated once again :)

buy another case fan for your peace of mind

One of my machines is almost the same (except 2 Ghz Intel), and I have no probs at all with 'standard' cooling - give it a try with existing setup, and if you experience instability problems - go for extra cooling then.

u could get one of them exhaust blowers from maplin and put that under ur video card.......thats what i have done works a treat .......and its was under a £10 i think .......;)

try 2 have a fan at the front 2 suck in air ........and 1 in the back that blows...........
also maplins do a H/D coolmaster (might b wrong name )...it's only a cage with a poor heat srink on it with 3 smallfans in the front .......its ok i get less blue screens of death now ........;)

cheers, think I'll give the exhaust blower for the GFX a go..... I didn't want to fork out for one of those OTES things, they're ridiculously overpriced!

Actually I'll try the HDD thing as well :p

I strongly recommend you get a 400W PSU. With some mobos the 300W doesn't cut it and they become unstable because of the load on the +5V line, you may be okay with an Abit tho.

ahh cheers ok I will, I thought I read somewhere that Athlon XP's needed a 300W PSU ?!

At least 300W is the recomendation, the more the better tho

Personally I'd say the spec was fine and until you build it don't bother with anything else...

extra fans, bigger PSU's - they all just make your PC nosier and if there isn't a heat problem (which tbh with that spec there shouldn't) you'll be better off not throwing more crap in.

Oh, and for those who think they need a wind tunnel to cool their graphics cards - the reference Ti4200 design from NVIDIA is passively cooled - they don't run hot enough to need a fan.

thats what i'd like a passively cooled ti4200, i've got my pc nice & quiet, i'd like to keep it that way.

how'd u go about keeping it quiet? is there some magic compromise between few fans for less noise and more fans for more cooling ?

i was running an overclocked athlon 1.1 @ 1.2, 5 hdds, 2 scsi cd roms, ls 120, all 6 pci card slots full and 9 case fans off a 300W psu for over 2 years, you dont *need* anything higher, im more than convinced its pure myth to be honest.

It's nothing to do with the CPU speed, the load is on the +5V line which I believe is RAM (??), I have an Epox mobo that is very sensitive to fluctuations on this line and cuts out if it dips to 4.7V, even using a 850Mhz Duron I still get this problem, but a cheapo £22 400W PSU solves it, same issue happened with SK on his Epox mobo.

My Abit seems less sensitive, but I put a 400W in that anyway.

You will seriously compromise your ability to overclock, if you go this route tho,

don't plan on overclocking it at all, i'm not l337 enough :p I don't want to solder the cip in any way and I don't like the look of altering the FSB :(
