Constant Crashing...

Subject says it all, doesnt seem to be anything that triggers it just a random lock up. seems to be happening with increasing regularity but that may be paranoia. ctrl alt del does nothing but background programmes like roger wilco and winamp keep running. DaoC is the only game this happens on in this manner.
Running on an amd K7, geforce 2 ti. ultra and using dialup connection. And yes, I do have the latest direct X and drivers for my graphics card.
Just wanted to know if anyone else has a similar problem or if theres anything that can be done. Thx.

It crashes a lot for me too.
The game just freezes at random times, although I can still move the mouse pointer around, and sometimes I can ctrl-alt-del and end task rather than have to reboot.

It happened very rarely on the US servers, but happens regularly here.
Sometimes it doesn't happen all night, other times it's every 10 minutes.

My pc specs are Athlon 1200, 512mb, geforce2 mx 64mb.

I have the latest drivers too, and it's also the only game that crashes for me :(

yeah it happened twice to me tonight. The whole pc locks up in windows xp.
I do have the latest BETA drivers for my grfx card card because hte latest drivers dont work with only this game :flame:
athlon 1700+
Oh the very odd thing about these lock ups. When i locked up at least 1 member inthe group i was with went ld at the same time. They got kicked by the game and i crashed. Not fair is it.:puke:

Someone suggested it might have something to do with the PSU (power supply unit) thoughts / comments anyone?

constant locks ups

i to have been suffering from this, for months it seems, been getting worse, after the last patch its been a nightmare, i constantly lock up in the cities, and bgs.

It seems to have got worse since this weekend, ld or crash every 10 minutes.

as of this writing the servers have just gone down and goa are looking into it, dunno if theyve got a problem or not.

been a lot of latency in europe since kpnquest or whoever they are ( big french telco i think ) went into receivership, the backbone was shut down a week or more ago i think, and since then all traffic has been re-routed down other lines, thus huge lag .

ive had issues with ld since i started using adsl and i wonder if any people in same position are suffering the same ?

my config is :

amd k6-ii 500
win me
512mb ram
geoforce ii mx
adsl router set to allow all traffic to this machine
zone alarm firewall

ive used there online help system, been next to no use, after a couple of quick suggestions, how to configure my router, my firewall, they started ignoring my ammendments to the question then closed it.

been getting my isp to ping my router every second and have extensive logs of traffic etc, nothing wrong my end they say.

when i re-opened it they replied 'blah blah blah, etc etc, cant see anything wrong, zone alarm must not work with your system. turn it off to play.'

i have an adsl connection, always on, always open to hackers.

methinks i will not be turning off my firewall.

if someone else has experienced anything like this, please reply, specially if youve fixed it :)

Well it seems like I've managed to fix the crashing.
I didn't realise there were some newer Detonator drivers available until I checked this weekend.
After downloading and installing them the game hasn't crashed once.

Fingers crossed that's the lock up problem solved, now I just have to worry about the LD's ;)

Microsoft admitted there was a bug in XP which could cause games to crash. If you have XP better check their pages for the update.

Thx for all the replies,
problem is definitely not with graphics or connection, I dont get a chance to LD cos I crash too quickly :) I have since worked out what appears to be the problem. All those experiencing this should reboot immediately and check their CPU temperature, mine was up to 53 degrees after a crash (way too high :E ) this is almost certainly the problem. Unfortunately Due to the ambient temperature of my room and the lack of ventilation I'm going to have to resort to watercooling my cpu. which is efficient but expensive :(.
Anyone know of a site with advice on water cooling?

thx.

Why use watercooling? That's WAY WAY OTT.

Get some case fans and replace the CPU fan you have, making sure to use heat transfer paste.

Reason for water cooling is that Im in an excessively hot room, heat sink and cpu fan are mid to top of the line right now so it wont make much difference and a case fan would just replace hot air with very warm ambient air.....*sigh*

My computer freezes up at random times as well. Sometimes I can go all day on camelot without it freezing others I get 5 mins into the game then I got to reboot. I got the latest driver for the graphics and sound card that I know of.

Spec is
Athalon 1gHz
640 meg ram
GeForce Mx2
and a MSI-KT7 VIA KT133 chipset.

Maybe its just the Athalons that freeze up. Seem to be alot here that use Athalon.

What operating system are you using?

Just one point, if your motherboard is a VIA chipset based, make sure you get the latest via 4in1 drivers, this fixed ALL my daoc crashing problems

Yea Via chipsets are are a bit dodgy sometimes - but point is he's got more than 512Mb ram, if he's not running NT, 2K, or XP that's probably the problem, or one of them. :)

windows 98 se is the OS
But I got it damppered down to 512 meg ram so that is all its using.
I got EQ as well and it runs fine same as all the other games. ( Appart from morrowind which does freeze up now and again ).

I will take a look for the new 4 in one from VIA as I updated it at the begining of the year.

Checklist of Things To Do! (tm)

1) Get Via 4IN1s.
2) Update Nvidia Drivers
3) Disable any strange tweaking tools you have
4) Make sure you have only 512Mb worthf memory insterted - 98 based Operating systems can't page more than 512Mb.
5) Make sure your addin cards aren't too close together - heat problems
6) If your motherboard has RAID don't use PCI slot 2 as it's often shared.
7) If all else fails re-install 98

Just don't blame me if your PC blows up. Not that anything SHOULD blow up... just don't blame me ;)

Um is there a Burn all ATI Radeon gfx cards on that list.
Lets just say after 3 weeks talking to goa they couldent help. the US said it was those drivers within 10 min. ( im not flaming goa)
Oh well maybe one day ati will come out with display drivers that work with doac. last months drivers i got 5 seconds before lock up, with this months its up to 30 min - 4 hours. i forgot to mention its running at 3 frames a sec this month :)
Can anyone recommend me what gfx card i should go for that is good performance yet relativly cheap

thanks

Any variety of Geforce2 will probably be better than what you have now.

It depends what you mean by cheap though - GeForce2 MX200's are pretty inexpensive as graphics cards go but not wunderfully fast. If you have the cash (About £70 if I remember correctly) go for something like a GeForce4MX - much slower than a standard GeForce4 but still very reasonable.
