I bought the half-life counterstrike game the cd but now people tell me that i have to buy just Half-Life and download counterstrike in order to have the console can i just download counterstrike v1.0 with this version of the game??

WTF!!! Which prick told u that!
I have the half life generations pack, it comes with counter strike HL and the full HL. The only difference is that in CSHL you have a smaller install diff key code adn no single player files. The console was on as default for me, no probs. The key to bring down the console is the tilde key, directly above TAB and below ESC. YOu should have no troubles getting it down in games dont know about during menus though.

There is one reason to install full HL and the d/l counter strike, and that is the 5 missing maps in th retail version + the annoying weapon names. However this is only worth doing if you already have the d/l counter strike (about 80mb) on CD or your hard drive, this is cause the txt file takes a second to d/l and teh missing maps are only 23mb.

Hmm not certain (cos i dont have cs retail) but there should be a line in your config.cfg,in the cs directory, with the line - console "0" in it..Just change the 0 to a 1 and ~ should toggle the console.
Also make sure u have this line in the same config - bind "~" "toggleconsole". Should be in by default.

hl.exe -console
