Console Cheating?

Recently I got sent this picture, and asked if it was cheating. The person who shall not be named pls thx, said that it was done with only console commands (which I aint gonna list here). Many people think that console commands are legal, but are these exceptions to the rules?

Tricky one this. The way i decided to look at stuff like this is either

a) it's in the game
or
b) it was not meant to be in the game

Examples of a)
Silent run script, recoil script, zoom-any-gun script, bunnyhop script

Examples of b)
invisibilty cheat, lambert (this command was removed eventually), hossie jumping

At first glance I would classify this "cheat" as a) in the game. I would of course need to see how it was done and which commands were used.

Nice one for bringing it to our attention tho meats

It's a cheat pure and simple.

Talk to Davej the map creator. He designed that area to be a tad dark. Also from the look of it no area will be dark. Ok it's only console commands, BUT it's cheating since the guy is not suppose to see that clearly and he has a huge advantage over the other players.

Just another example of someone trying to push the limits.

Fair point SAS, but you open up a whole can of worms with that. If someone sets all their gamma settings (in display control applet, and in game) to max, following your logic, they too are cheating...?

It's a grey area. Have a think about it. What could you class as cheating? For example the gamma console command is probably used together with the brightness command e.t.c, and these settings area always different for each player depending on his machine e.t.c.

But this pic is clearly OTT. However some people could say console commands are part of the game therefore it's not cheating? But looking at this pic you instantly know it's over stepping the mark.

The problem is there are no set rules or guidelines to say exactly what is right/wrong, and I doubt we will see any.

It's down to the CS development team to decide on realistic and acceptable bounds/limits on these types of commands. They repeatedly make silly mistakes, like leaving the lambert command active for so long.

They designed the game, they have the "vision" tm(c) and they need to set the acceptable boundaries.

Errrrm, i'm ranting about nothing in particular. Time for an insulin jab methinks...

But that has gotta hurt your eyes after a couple of minutes or so... so, let them cheat... you'll know the cheaters by the tell-tale white cane and guide dog

Its cheating, since its not how the map was intended to look.

Having been a long term AQ2 player I can say that only recently has it come to light how many people have the GL_Modulation level set high, since now the server shows what level people have it at and sets a max of 10, well used to b4 I stopped playing. Some people require it higher since there GFX card makes the maps too dark but if you set it higher than you need it then it gives away the position of enemies which is unfair. Not only because it gives ppls position away but in AQ2 you pick one weapon then one item and one of the items on offer is IR and by using a High modulation level you get around this and can use something else from the items.

Using this cheat in CS makes it easier to spot T/CT people which is unfair.

People have allways done Gl_mod tricks, i never liked it, so i never botherd with it. The first guy that told me how to do it, because he did it himself was the top frager in the unbeaten KMA team, back in the Ukccl Cheating ehh, everybody has there tricks, like it or not Personally not

The only bloody thing I know how to use in CS is scripting for quick buying weapons and stuff, but I think everyone uses these.
I'm glad that I don't know how to activate cheats coz that way I'm never tempted.

And yeah, that pic is definately cheating.
Also the developers should also get their finger out and sort the cheat problems instead of leaving them in until their use has spoilt the games appeal.

hmm

its only the people cheating themselves. who gives a shit if you get shot by a cheater, they are losing out to themselves in reality. if they played a half descent player they get ass-kicked, cosd most cheaters suck ass. that silly thing where you change the resolution cant be helped though, i designed a map myself and it must be pretty annoying to have the hours of work making dark ares look good ruined by some twat who cant play cs. if they wanna cheat they should go play ultima online.

This is blatantly all done with gamma and brightness, and is not a difficult thing to replicate.

The problem with whether this is "cheating" or not is the age old 3DFX/Nvidia problem. Put simply, settings which make your game look nice and bright and clean and how it's meant to look with a 3DFX card will make you think you're a blind labrador playing in a dungeon with an Nvidia card. It took me literally weeks to get CS looking decent on my Geforce, having to go as far as manually raise brightness and gamma in Windows (so my desktop looks crap now imo) just so everything wasn't pitch black. "Normal" settings on an Nvidia card would probably make a 3DFX card look like the above (and give it that characteristic 'washed out' look of a 3DFX card), so it would be virtually impossible to build restrictions into the engine.

Embattle highlights it nicely by saying that people use very high GL_modulate in AQ2, and that 10 is now the maximum - in Q2, I have to have my modulate set at 10 minimum, AND raise my overall brightness/gamma in my windows settings, or everything is simply too dark to play.

the way that they cheat like that is they go to sites where they find hacks and then they download them that hack right there in th picture is called they white-out hack.
