Conductive pen 4 my Duron? Where can i get 1 in the UK?

Hi guys,

Duron 700 goin to be arriving in the morning so just in case its multiplier locked (my t-bird wasnt?) do u guys know where i can get one of those conductive pens from?

I might give the pencil lead trick a go till i find the sweet spot then go for something more substantive
Still the closing of the L1 bridges just like the t-bird yeah?
Cant remember what grade pencil u need to do this?

I dunno were you could get the pen from but a pencil does it just aswell and it's easier to sort out if you cross connect any pins you were'nt supposed to. And yeah it's exactly the same as un-locking a T-Bird, I got me Duron 700@1007 at the mo sweet as

Jonny Jackal, We're talking about the new Duron/T-Bird chips from AMD. They come multiplier locked so you can only Overclock them using the FSB but if you use a pencil and play a quick game of join the dots on the top of the processor and voila, you've unlocked it ready for a multiplier O/C. HTH

Got my Duron this morning

Looks just like my Cu T-bird
The serial on it is:-

I found some silver paint on Maplins webby so goin to use that to close the L1 bridges with a pin as a brush
Pencil lead - not impressed

Better go and see what i can find out about this Duron's serial.

Will keep ya informed on how it overclocks

As for bodhi's comment on crappy amd - Ive just replaced all my home systems (P3733@933, 2xP3733's SMP) for a Duron 700@900 and a T-Bird @ 1ghz.
Seeing as i used to have Intel only and have switched does this not tell u something bodhi?

It tells me that the Duron is loads cheaper than the P3 and overclocks nicely too.
It also tells me that the 1ghz t-bird is reasonably priced £267.00 versus £880.00 for a P3 @ 1ghz! :/

Who the hell would buy intel at this present time if they have any regard for the contents of their wallet?

U see all these guys shooting for a 1ghz with their P3's and spending loads on cooling equipment etc. to try and get there. When they get there they aint goin to get a stable system to run 24/7 - Why didnt they spend less and just buy a 1ghz t-bird which would be cheaper?

Oh yeah, also having run both AMD and Intel systems side by side can confirm there is no advantage at all in having a Intel based rig over an AMD.

P.S Yes I have seen an T-Bird in action. Running complex office tasks (Visual C++ and Access running together) it fell apart. A slower P3 system kept on running smoothly (T-Bird 750 vs P3 600 Katmai core). and it was entirely processor based (NT4's task manager is a godsend ). Sorry for pointing out that there was more to life than games. Most AMD fans dont like that. And TUG sorry for pointing out that experience is more important than tomshardware reviews. I hate pissing on people's fire. Honest....

im running at 750 at the moment, does anybody know that exact settings for the bios so i can wack i up to 900?

Case fans?
Bios version for motherboard, etc, etc?

Try changing "CPU DRIVE STRENGTH" if u have that option in ur bios. Upping voltage be helpful too

its a KT7 mobo and i have a globalwin fan on iti dnot know enough about overclocking to up the settings u see, its not too good over 750 so i need to know the best voltage settings etc

right im on 800 now

my voltage is max at 1.850
and the other voltage thing is on 3.50

my CPU Drive strength is 3

if i go to 850 i get Windows Protection error. please restart

Try lowering your 3.50v to 3.30 volts?

I have usually found the best way to tell how far a CPU will go is to overclock it @ standard volts with retail sink and fan.
Then when u have found the point where it will fully load into windows but gives u errors and lock-ups. This point is in most cases going to be the speed you will be able to run with stability with the bigger heatsink/fan and upped volts.

From what u have said so far i am leaning towards thinking you will never run 900 stable as in my experience so far with durons and t-birds they usually go up and up and then u hit a sudden brick wall

U could also try running your rig with the side panel off?
If u can run ok like this then u have a case ventilation problem - more case fans required

What temp is your CPU running at 800mhz?

That's my upgrade path - I sold a few PC's and hence the frequency of change - I'm not loaded however! Guess what though - the Athlon is fantastic - knocks spots off my old PIII 550 - yes, even in CAD work and we won't even talk about value for money! Next buy - probably a Duron!

Haha, I'm a skiv! Bodhi says so, it must be true. You see, I'm running a Celery II 667 @ 1000, and I paid nothing for it, apart from the £18 for the slotket so it would run in my existing rig, the one that has run my Celery 300A @ 450 for the last 2.5 years!

So I'm a skiv, because I got the processor, a minidisc recorder, a minidisc head-unit for the car, and I still had change to ge down the pub when compared to the outlay on Bodhi's P3.
