My mate keeps having this problem, he'd post about it himself except his PC doesn't stay on long enough :)

<echo> um
<echo> it just says some sorta error message
<echo> log off now + save
<echo> shutting down
<echo> and gives me 60 seconds :)
<echo> i'll type out the error message next time
<mank> ok

Vague, but that's all he's got time for :p

<echo> THIS SYSTEM IS SHUTTING DOWN
<echo> SAVE ALL WORK
<echo> UNSAVED WILL BE LOST
<echo> AUTHORISED BY NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
<echo> WINDOWS MUST NOW RESTARTED BECAUSE REMOTE PROCEDURE CALL (RPC) SERVICE TERMINATED UNEXPECTEDLY
<echo> 7 SECONDS
<echo> :<
<echo> 4
<echo> 2
* echo Quit (Connection reset by peer)

Tell him to paste the error message into google.

Good idea. Except he's not able to stay on long enough :)

edit: just ran it through google and can't find anything :/

edit2: found some stuff on google, one advises him to install the service pack for Win2k but his PC won't stay online long enough to let him, or to install a firewall - he can't stay online long enough to download one. Found a solution at least, fuck knows how he's going to manage it if his PC gives him 60 seconds to work with at a time.

The latest overflow error effects the RPC and results in a crash and reboot when the connection is lost.

Get him to install a firewall and block the following ports;

TCP/UDP Port 135
TCP/UDP Port 139
TCP/UDP Port 445

Or get him to install this patch , it should sort it out.

doesnt' win2k/nt have an option of what to do when there is a system failure? And you can select not to restart?

Unless it's a tiny patch/firewall I doubt he'll be able to stay online long enough to get either, that's the problem.

Heh, so how do you cause peoples PCs to do that? My flatmate has a PC on my LAN with no firewall, and I'm teaching him why he needs one.:)

I'm having exactly the same prob (this is my 2nd PC I'm on atm).

My main PC (which is having the problems) does this even if not connected to the net btw.

There's 2 different error messages. Sometimes you get Msg 1 followed by 2. Then other times you wont get Msg 1, it will just launch into Msg 2, giving you 60 seconds until the PC shuts down.

Message 1:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

For more information about this error, click here.

So after that message goes you get -

Message 2:

The RPC error message - 60 seconds to shut down.

I cant give a full transcript of Message 2 yet as I keep losing my connect every 60 secs lol ;)

Will edit post when I can.

Tell him to turn on his computer, go to Start then Run and type Shutdown -a

This will cancel the RPC shutdown and allow him to stay online long enough to find a fix.

I had the exact same problem here, i downloaded the patch that Scooba noted (thankyou) then it gave me the message, turned off the net and on reboot installed the patch.

All seems to be ok now.....however that message will haunt me in my sleep for a long time, i'll also be jumping at any error message :uhoh:

Adams - I've not played CS for about 18 months mate.

/edit: just checked a few regular (and large) forums I use - spread like wildfire, threads all over complaining about it :)

I imagine some idiot has finally managed to write a script kiddie style worm for the exploit hence it exploding.

The fix was posted here last month sometime...

Edit; here

I'm not a counter-shit player :) apperantly, this only happens to users who have windows xp pro/home and don't have this patch installed and users that don't have a firewall up.

I had exactly the same problem today, managed to get on for long enough to get the patch.

Tbh, this is the first thing that I've EVER had a problem which a firewall would have solved. Never before seen the need for one tbh :\

bit of help, the patch is small nps downloading before computer restarts, if u enable win xp standard firewall it seems to stall shutdown and then u have enough time to use the patch ( this worked for me)

Patch installed and BlackIce v3.6 up. Works fine now.

Thanks, sc00ba.

booting your pc, network unplugged.
switching off "client for windows networks "
and "windows file and printer sharing" in network properties
this should give you time to
connect pc back to network and patch.

oh and if you only have 1 pc leave them both off

I have the patch installed, up-to-date virus software, two firewalls and a NAT router running. Am I a little over-protective? :)

I used to use BlackIce many moons ago but am now using ZoneAlarm - I think its shite.

Is BlackIce any good now? Or any other firewalls you'd recommend?

If you dont have time to download the patch then just turn off RPC by going to run and typing shutdown -a

would it be possible for one of the Mods to create a sticky thread about the LovSan worm and how to fix it? i think there's going to be an influx of pointless posts for the next few months.. at least having a central post of info would be better than rummaging through useless forum threads.

its scary how quick it is, i took my old Athlon 550 and installed Win2k Pro onto it, didnt patch nothing and within 10 minutes lovsan was making sweet love to the disk...
