Is it me, or is it that young'uns nowadays can't communicate?

We have a young lad (17 I think) who works in our office, he does "stuff", mostly admin/office support stuff. Rarely I need to ask him to do stuff for me, I'm not overbearing or frightening in any way, in fact I'm "Mr Smileyface" in the office. This lad has never once made eye contact with me, nor has he ever used more than 2/3 words. Todays conversations have consisted solely of grunts and yeahs all muttered almost inaudibly.

I feel like shaking him and yelling "WAKE UP!!!" quite loudly directly into his ear.

Well he could be one of two things:

1. Gay and fancies you... and is to embarresed to look at u.
2. Just plaing shy..... i know people like that......

Being 18 though i can say that i can communicate well... cept i talk funny and too quickly lol...

i talk to much apparently.

Perhaps ur just over bearing on him.. Offer him a fag or summin one day... Or start talking about the footy or summin..

that really made me laugh cyfr, nice one :)

I dunno Yuck, perhaps he finds you physically imposing, or has seen something you did that impressed him in such a way that he now finds it hard to communicate with you (either in a positive or negative fashion). Perhaps he was just having a really shite day.
If you're willing to put an effort in, perhaps standing him a drink at a friday night's after-work evaluation will open some doors?

Well you could perhaps send him to a prepaid selfconfidence course.

Or you could just bash him with blunt objects until you get a reaction.

Or he could just have endured a load of traumatic experiences and ended up socially inept. The fact that you feel like "shaking him and yelling "WAKE UP!!!" quite loudly directly into his ear" might be just what he's picking up on.

My sons 17 and sometimes he's barely coherent. Its not that he dosnt know what he wants to say, but that he doesnt formulate a response in his head before replying. If I make him think first its much better. I think its just an age thing.

We got some guy in our office. Hes been here about 4 months now but is still mute. I noticed one day he was looking at MMORPG site so tried to make some conversation about it seeing as though I payed the beta a long time ago. Best responce I got was 'yeah'. Ive given up these days and dont bother. I think hes got a real problem as hes overweight (just slightly :eek7: ) and only just got a job from 8 years of leaving uni. Yesterday I got in the office at 9:30 to find he wasnt there. No phone call to say hes sick or whatever. Its now 9:10 and hes not here again today. Can someone be really that shy that they cant phone up to say hes sick. I cant go out on jobs because im here managing his bloody job.

Maybe you acidentally sexually harrased him and he's too scared to come to work???

Sexual Harrasment in the workplace really is as bad as feminists say it is!

Yes, for 'anxiety' values of 'shy'.

Leave the wee things alone. They're just shy. No need to force yourself upon them with a beer and a big smile.

How about "Mr smileyface" at work leave the "shy" person the f*ck alone :p

It's not like everyone wants to talk to every wanker that comes along.

Shy my ass...more like not interested.
