To be honest, Microsoft are entitled to do this, and if they took it to court they'd no doubt win. Whilst US judges have rightly complained about the windows trademark, no one is willing to really challange it.

What tickles me is the aggressiveness with which such things are met. WinSuperSite faced this situation a little while back, I believe, but rather than fighting they agreed, and they now have a great relationship with Microsoft, gaining a lot of exclusive previews and interviews. NeoWin and other sites also comply with Microsoft's requests and happily coexist. Why can't people just accept matters and try their best to get along? Oh, sorry, I forgot, Microsoft are evil ;) hehe

Kind Regards

True enough. But at the end of the day, this is only making headlines because Microsoft is involved. If another company wanted to enforce there trademark status against a domain, then I doubt very much if it would cause as much discussion. Oh well

Kind Regards

it depends on what company I guess. were I to register "ibmsystems.com" I guess it figures that old blue would use the steel fist in velvet glove effect to pummel me into oblivion.
on the other hand were I to register "bbcviewers.com" I have the distinct feeling that the actual bbc wouldn't give a rats arse.

I guess that's true, TdC :) But then again, I suppose it's what on the website, and how 'official' it looks. If your bbcviewers.com had the BBC logo on it, and yet contained offensive material or otherwise detrimental material, then no doubt it would be cause for concern. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands of examples of this happening across the net, many of which will never get picked up on, but it doesn't mean things shouldn't go unchallanged.

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. I don't know why I always seem to end up supporting Microsoft, I guess I just think they get a lot of bad press. And, whilst they're no angels, they don't really deserve all of it.

*Jonty picks up his bank statement to find an extra $10,000,000 USD deposited in it by one Gill Bates. Hmm, I wonder if that's a pseudonym for someone we know? ;)*

Jonty I hear Tdc and me realy need an opterothingy, so spread it around, or we'll start yelling astroturfing

oh and ontopic, if you knowingly ignore trademark violation it can harm you in later defenses of it (read if MS ignores it, they could end up losing the trademark later on )
