Can't decide now... been so much promised by Cryptic Studios about City of Heroes, and it does look proper fluffy, but the fact i cant be a villain kinda put me off (at least until the inevitable expansion comes along) and no matter how much i look at it, it doesn't appear to be coming along in leaps and bounds as it were...

I would attend the forums there more often, but they have something like 150 browsing it at any one time, so by the time you've typed your reply, the thread is already off onto page 3 :m00: cba to refresh, just to find theres been 80 posts in the last couple of minutes (actually, cant keep up is closer the truth... ;) )

anyone playing the Beta yet? Thoughts?

Registered aaages ago, but im not tempted to be shelling out £30 for a pre release thingemy, that only really gives me a definate beta invite (do they charge for that too, like SW:G did?) and the chance to reserve my name, and the way my head works, superhero names fall out of me like hair from a spaniel...

The trailer had me gasping for air, it looked so fantastic (although thats a lot of history to consider before you even start playing the game, but i suppose any less going on and it would have had zero longevity)

If im offered, ill definately give the beta a go (depending on ££'s), so i s'pose i'll see... i decided i'd close my SW:G account if CoH was as good as it looked...

www.coh.com and register.
9th april they'll randomly draw a bunch that gets in. preoder is the only definate way to get in, but costs mayor money since you need to import from the US (depending on the vendor, between $70 and $100

Wouldn't shock me if within a few months of the initial release, Cryptic will start releasing info on the first expansion, which logically should be a sort of alternative realm, as it were, populated by villains, with some form of RvR zone...

Sucks that they didnt think to release both at the same time, then at least the villains wouldn't be playing catch up...

I like the look, Superheroes is an awesome theme for a MMORPG, but with so many eager people on the boards, i cant keep up with opinions there, so not sure how the Beta is going from a player point of view, instead of the "good" hype that can be filtered out and used in press releases...

I am playing beta.

While I can't say much due to the NDA I can guarantee you that it's an awesome game. the missions have a good story behind them, the villain groups are qwell thought out and look great, the city is breathtaking...not only does it look good, but there's always somebody who needs saving...

Yes, it does have it's problems (doesn't every mmog have em?) but so far this is the most stable and complete beta I've played. and the most fun.

Good things about CoH: It's stable, character creation is great - almost as good as Star Wars Galaxies - and has a million options for customizing your superhero. It's fun right out of the gate at level 1. Graphically it's decent enough - the devs have made a smart choice to reduce polygon count on unimportant things like buildings, NPCs, cars and stuff to keep framerate high even during big battles, whereas the animations on the heroes is quite good, and the particle effects on the superpower "spells" are great eye candy. The game has a very good system of dynamic instanced missions where you can go (solo or in a group) into a building with a fixed objective, and no-one else can come in to grief, harass or killsteal you. The one really innovative thing is a system they call "sidekicks". If you roll a new level 1 character and your buddies are all at level 15, one of them can make you his hero's sidekick, which bumps you up so that you fight at around level 12-13 and you can join his group without being a liability (every MMORPG should steal this feature). The devs have some good ideas about what new content will be added as the game evolves, new high end zones, new mission types, new hero types, new powers. Combat is fun - it's not just target-nearest-enemy-autoattack, it's all interactive.

Things you may not like about CoH: it's pure PVE. You can't be a villian, there's no PVP at all. There is no official word on whether or not this will ever be added to the game in any form. There's no rare uberlewt, no unique items, no rare spawns (take that you EQ whores).

Things that are not so good about CoH: underneath the fun combat there's a level treadmill and an exp bar (1 more bub to level 10). There's no endgame yet, just killing mobs to level up to go to higher zones to kill mobs to etc. etc. etc. It's US$15/month. And, of course, it's a MMORPG with all that implies (servers packed full of illiterate muppets).

Based on my beta experience I'm going to buy it when it comes out and play it for a while. But probably not for that long, as soon as the shiny new fun wears off, I'll be cancelling.

i got an invite last nite and downloaded it

played it some and its quite good tbh

got to level 9

the only thing that stops me right now from buying it when it comes out is basicly that theres no plans for any pvp...

theres not even dueling

if it had some decent pvp this would be one hell of a daoc beater...

there's serious plans for duelling (as far as I know) an arena style thingie and all that
and they are talking bout super villains, but no eta or definitive official word yet...
just rumours about an expansion in the near future that just might include that.

just read this in coh foruns

"Note that we're doing the same thing as L2 in terms of allowing European customers to download the game any buy a regcode online. More info to follow - but the short form is trying to make sure y'all can play and launch day and without getting too hosed by import/shipping.

Firm plans for European partners/servers/localization/etc. to follow. We're trying to get the US service nailed down first thing, but we aren't forgetting y'all.

City of Villains —Want to play the bad guy in Paragon City? You'll get your chance in Cryptic Studios' City of Villains , currently under development and to be shown in limited play at E3. While City of Heroes ( www.cityofheroes.com ) is ready for an April 28 launch, Cryptic developers already are working on the first major expansion to the game that will allow players to take on the role of villain in Paragon's modern metropolis. Turn the tide on all the heroes and heroines and lead your crime syndicate into battle in the impressive 3D backdrop of Paragon City .

It seems quotes don't count as part of the minimum message length. Ignore this paragraph.
