The servers are so laggy now;

A lot of the time, cable uses expecting about 40-50 pings get about 100
Isdn users expecting about 60-70 get 130, and modem users expecting 150-200 get 200-300.

The bw v1.0 servers are the same machine(s) that used to run bw 7.1 servers; this isnt acceptable, because v1.0 is much more intensive as we all know.

It might be that it is a networking problem, eg if all the traffic were being routed by a less-than-optimal route via Amsterdam, but whichever it is, it isnt good enough.

The servers need an upgrade

well im on isdn, through bt, and it's been real bad of late, actually since 1.0

Dunno whether its bt, but when ive got bad pings it seems that most have, EXCEPT 1 or 2 who have low pings (isdn - cable etc)

On Sat morning/afternoon the pings were trippling for me, although pings to other servers were still in the 60's. Same again 2nite (sunday evening). It's ok with a few peeps, i.e. start of a game, but when they get full my ping just gets higher and higher (and my comp aint the problem - geforces whizz along on hl)

and NO ONE knows the horror of being on ISDN (or better) and those horrible modem memories coming back..... ;o(

It nearly brought tears to me eyes....

To terra

terra, you say that your cable modem runs at pings of 20-30 on bw.

Two responses

1) Firstly, i believe you are exagerating; in a proper fight(and im not talking about being the only person in server, or in the middle of nowhere by urself), no cable modem will achieve 20-30, simply because it is latency, not ping we are talking about here; the server will lag some because of the amount that is going on.

More importantly though
2) I too have had pings which I would expect, that is, for my isdn setup, about 50, rising to about 75 in a big fight. BUT; most of the time is isnt like that at all; which prooves that it isnt me, my connection, or anyone elses; its the server that is sometimes sh1t and sometimes not.

huh

How can I see what ping I have during firefights?

Like I'm gonna check my ping while the other guy is shooting me.

I have a standard 30ish ping throughout, sometimes 40 or sometimes 20. When I get into firefights I notice nothing different.

I have no reason to lie about this, a ping of 30 is no different hardly from a ping of 50 - 60.

Yeah, I've also noticed a slight increase in lag during busy times and I use ISDN to BarryDial.

Cable modems are a seperate issue and will tend to be laggy during peak hours (ie evenings and weekends) due to usage within the CM providers infrastructure. Some will be lucky and wont be affected (yet), some wont. One of the BW mob has a CM now and finds the BW CS servers unplayable in the evenings due to a wildy fluctuating ping, and the problem starts well before his connection gets to BW (ie its nothing to do with us).

Anyway, I'll mention it to DrChris (the slightly more laggy feel to CS since 1.0 during big peaks).

I agree this is goddam pathetic, i have just been on BW(8) and everone on the server was complaining about constant lag and there were 9 people on the server! Ive noticed this with bookable servers and Bwtfcl servers. just do somthing about it!
