Anyone else started to see the above in the last few days?

Theres a post on XSR from someone having the same problem and a couple of clanmates suffered it on and off yesterday.

Haven't touched the key, Quake3, installed/uninstalled anything between it working (Friday) and not working (Saturday onwards). Have tried dozens of servers and various ISPs.

Luckily I managed to get a connection to the RA3 league server just in time for our match yesterday, shortly afterwards it was back to failing.

/me prays alls well in time for the bwq3dml playoffs :eek:/

I got it once or twice yesterday, but only for a fleeting moment. The re-try succeded in both cases.

I presume it could be down to;

a) Certain ISPs having routing probs to ID's auth server.

or

b) A denial of service (or somesuch) attack on the auth server.

I had no problems at all Sunday night. And nobody in the BWQ3CTFL reported any auth problems.

What ISP are you using? Sounds like they have a routing problem.

This is really driving me nuts now :(

Tried 2 friends keys, a reinstall of Quake3, all the above ISPs (no local firewall) and still no luck.

WORKING AGAIN!

Someone suggested removing my network card. 1 card lighter and a reboot, everything works again.

Odd!

Having said everything was fine sunday night, last night at least two players in the BWQ3CTFL had the same problems. One was cured by a reboot but soon re-appeared.

Strange indeed.

I *may* be able to shed some light on this problem. I know someone (shall remain nameless) that was having these precise problems. I basically think the following was causing problems :

Network card set to DHCP (was system at home so DHCP setup for a lan previously)
DNS server configured which was 192.168.x.x variety (e.g DHCP allocated)

When I forced the network card to static address and made sure dns and such like was disabled it worked first time.

Here is where I guess :

You launch Q3
Your Q3 says 'Hi authorizing server heres my key'
Because of above issue its request time out hell (ping authorize.quake3arena.com)
Q3 thinks oh shit your CD key aint valid hence unknown_client_to_auth

Of course the other issue is when you switch IP's and Q3 is locked to your previous IP.

Hope this helps someone

Strange thing was I hadn't made any alterations to anything between it working and failing.

Also, afaik its the game server that contacts the auth server, not the client.

Fair enough if that is the case.

But they are fixed :)

client_unknown_to_auth

it happens because when you connect to a sever now it checks with a master server to check you cd key and if it is in use then forget it you wont connect .
