the big black box is a 'borg-cube' style poota case. at teh time my desk looked like that (just after I moved in) I had no place at all to put my legs heh. it's a lot better now, but I have no digicam to prove it. atm I've just shifted a ton of papers, and actually threw some away! teh win! now I'm looking for cdroms to put back into the cases I've unearthed
teh n00k is turning out brilliantly! only niggle is that my screen switcher box thing, that allows me to connect several conputers to one monitor/kbd/mouse has gone and br0ked itself :/ oh well, I'll have a fiddle and see if it will start working again, otherwise I'll have a new one this monday.
aye, I'm a bit jealous of the tiny quiet systems everyone seems to have these days. my poota corner is starting to get a bit cluttered again, and I've only just finished cleaning and moving stuff about. bah :/
I'm still at it! a two-day cleaning excersise should leave me ok for another year or two I am binning all sorts of things. I found a Voodoo2 SLI cable a minute ago and dumped it. I can't even remember which computer I had my v2's in, but it also had a TNT-1 card in. I used that for a time untill I realised that my "old" v2/SLI outclassed it
I heard KVM switches can make the monitor output look a little lame. I've used them before, but only at work on 14" monitors with NT4, so wouldn't notice any difference. What are they like for games n shizzle?
well, tbh in games it's fine, and in practice it's quite handy. I must say that it has a problem with very high resolutions (above 1280x1024) where the problem manifests itself in a band (about 1,5cm width) down the left side of my monitor which is slightly out of focus. this goes away when the monitor is connected directly to a pc. I hasten to add that I bought the switch over three years ago, so I guess that there are higher-spec ones available.
Yeah, I guess. Didn't really wanna spend a whole lot of dosh though, unfortunately. Just fancied it so I could have my windows and linux box accessible at the same time without having to fumble under the desk with monitor cables etc.
i got one of those nasty "data transfer switch" boxes here wired up to my dual screen display at work
its one of those nasty manual ones, which leaves "ghosting" on the display. induces some nasty headaches with prolonged usage
got a fright when we opened one, the mass of wires was unbelievable
Ive got a belkin KVM at home, and I dont seem to suffer any probs. Ive heard that they can effect frame rates in games, but Ive not had any obvious problems.
yes, I've heard the same, usually about maximum rez and refreshrate. I push mine at 1280x1024@85hz, and while it can go over that the prob I mentioned becomes more visible. if I drop down to 1024x768 or lower you don't see it.
a manual one seems shit though, I imagine it has a big switch on the front like the old manual printer-share things. I control mine from my kbd, and it's really handy.
I use the old version of this. the new one (the link) has a much higher datarate than the older one, but I expect it functions the same. I just remembered: the cables that it uses are rather pricy (or used to be), so if you're thinking of getting an 8-way switch you'll be shelling out more than you'd expect.
Decided to post my decidedly UNtidy nook. This is a bit of a temporary set-up until the new study is completed, its actually my youngest daughters old nursery, hence the lovely yellow wall-paper.
