Well im about to try out AoC and wondering witch of the following 2 classes do the best in solo pve: Barbarian or Assassin?
Seen some mixed comments about assassins taking to much dmg, while other say they insta gib the mobs.
Of course rvr matters too, but doubt many can have good insight on that matter at the time :)

assassin, scales up to deal the most and quickest dps in the game, backside, cloth armor, and it hurts until you are 60 and can train the +% evade passive buff.

But even with cloth armor, corruption line has 3 sweet tools, that combined takes you from 10% to a hundred hp instantly (with the right styles) :)

Seems a lot of people are having problems finding good grind spots for them as they cannot take multiple mobs easily. At least not without certain abilities up. The mob connection is rather buggy still.

Pictish area in Thunder River would be good for assassins >60. I've pulled single mobs from gangs sitting around the fires, 90% of the time only 1 comes. Mercenary area in same zone is opposite, fire into a group and the whole bloody camps comes after you.

Not sure assassin is a good first char, much easier to go Conq/Temp/Guard.

Thanks for the reply to both of you :)

Im trying not to make the same mistake i made in daoc, loads of alts. Hoping to aim right and get the class i wanna play on first try :D

If assassin really is higher dps, they must be nice classes in pvp, so im gonna try them out and hope i can handle it all the way till i get evasion "talent" or what its called :)

Just 5gb left to dl

i found ranger fun till 62 ish then got bored for some reason, could kill mobs 4-5 levels higher before they got to me but exp just seemed slow.

Making priest atm which so far is really fun, killing 4-5-6 mobs at once at my level at 39 =)

I'd say take that time to play the classes. It's fun, especially since all four subclasses have different starting stories(well, different perspective to it, some cross references are really fun).

Also, it doesn't take long to notice how a class is, level 10 maybe?

I know alt-itis might strike fast, but if you're wondering what kind of class to play, using one Saturday to play all isn't a bad idea.

Personalyl i'm lucky enough to know exactly what i like to play(well, i like all classes really), so it wasn't a hard choice for my first characters.

2 last rookie q then :)

Since dagon is a PvE server... you got designated pvp areas, kinda like daoc?
Cant live completely without PvP for more than a few days.

And race wise (Aquilonia, Cimmeria and Stygia) i can be any of those races and still be in the FH guild?
Stygians look most badass to me :)

The problem with rolling a priest is that they are gonna get nerfed into the ground as far as pvp goes.

Roll an underpowered class like the conq which is sure as hell gonna bet buffed.

First question: At the moment i believe there's a pvp area(not sure) and pvp "minigames". So pvp is still around, and probably gets better over time.

And race is not a problem with guild, even if i refuse to bow down to this aquilonian rule! :D

I ve been in one of them, the aquilonian one. Looks like poitain, but not as clean and shiny. Seems noone was with me in that zone, at least I didnt meet anyone, so I dont know if you are free-to-kill there already.

BTW, I was in my 20ies when I got there, so anyone who would have seen me would likely have attacked.

Decent class for PVE.... - Priest Of Mitra...
They have a decent Smite style thats damage can be increased that does a AOE effect too... - they also have a 3 second "Feat"spell called Lance Of Mitra.. this spell is good because you can upgrade it so it does ALOT of damage and heals the group, it also a "Splash" damage style....
Thats what I made anyway and I'm easily 2/3 mobs 5/6 levels higher than me..

Thanks =)

Gwadien/Alex.

PS. If you want some more details, PM me in game - Gwadien =)

For solo PvE I would choose barbarian over assassin every day of the week. You will die so often with the assassin that it is untrue. On solo mobs or bosses assassins are godly and can destroy them if built properly, but most PvE areas have linked mobs and an assassin seriously struggles against them.

Everybody is awestruck when the assassin unstealths, takes 1/3 of the mobs health in one hit and then hits another lucky critical combo and kills it in the second hit. But they don't see the dozens of times you die to groups of cannon fodder that other classes solo with ease.

Stealth is not easy to use in AoC, higher level mobs will see through it from some distance and restealthing is a complete pain in the butt. But it is an assassin's main defence.

The barbarian is less dependent on stealth, has much much better armour, more hit points and skills for dealing with groups of mobs.

Don't get me wrong, I find playing Alexius to be entertaining and enjoyable a lot of the time -- but it is definitely hardmore PvE.

from what i have seen, ranger is the way to go.

They seem to fire off arrows as though they are holding a machine gun, and by all accounts are getting high enough crits to 1 shot a lot of classes, even a few lvls above them.

I personally am playing the shitty necro, and my experiance with ranger is that i'm usually dead before i can get my second 1 sec spell off. Plus the official forums are full of whines about how overpowered they are.

Ranger stomps any class atm dude they have more stuns then you can count usually i am dead before the stun wears off.

PVP is one big mess imo players bunny hopping around so you can barely hit them, players running to the water so anyone melee can't touch em.

I'm playing a conquerer. It's a soldier base-class, meaning u get heavy-armour, good HP and a defensive/frenzy-stance. The defensive-stance will surely come into handy for PvP, I reckon.

Furthermore, conquerers get quite abit of stuns (knockbacks) and provide the party with well-needed buffs (stamina-regen for example). You also get an ability that if someone else in your party gets hit, you do increasing more damage *and* get a random chance% to rezz someone in your party while you whack stuff up.

Pretty fun class, and not too gimped to level up aswell. Sure the DPS aint like an assassin, but I dont have to run like a sissie if 3 mobs come charging with drawn weapons :p

I wubs my conqueror, specced fully into guard of dancing steel at 73 atm, I can almost pull a grp of 3-4 75-76 mobs, fire dancing steel and go afk for 20s while they kill themselves on me, with a hp pot and knockdowns can take even more.

And Furious Inspiration is crazy, in a grp with 2 conqs we basically stopped any possible wipe in its tracks because the rez procced so damn often :D

yeah conq seems a nice class indeed. had pom, bs, conq, demo and tos chaining mobs in aztels the past 2 days at this nice spot we found - took 50-63 in those two days. the conqs shouts, combat rezz and general dps is great and seems like a really useful group char.
