Damien Duff's move to Tottenham was on hold last night after Chelsea told the north London club to increase their offer.
The Premiership champions confirmed that they have received an offer from Spurs for the 27-year-old winger but insisted that no agreement had been reached and that he has not had a medical exam.
According to Chelsea sources, Tottenham have tabled an offer of around £6 million for the Irish player, who became the first major signing of the Roman Abramovich era when he moved to Stamford Bridge from Blackburn for £17 million three years ago.
Chelsea want at least £10 million for Duff, but despite the haggling over the price it looks likely that Duff will eventually move on after manager Jose Mourinho agreed he could leave.
With the arrival of Michael Ballack and Andrei Shevchenko this summer, Mourinho is expected to change the way his side play.
Instead of the 4-3-3 system he has traditionally favoured he is likely to switch to 4-4-2 to make the most of his expensive new signings.
That would mean that Duff could be surplus to requirements and though he was once considered Abramovich's favourite player, he is now free to go, provided the right fee can be negotiated.
