Cheats!!! or is it?

Ok had this discussion in an IRC channel and various people had opinions on what leagues should ban.

Personally i do not want any modications of Pak files or any other external program allowed, unless it facilitaites the detection of such modifications. Much like Qizmo does in Quake1.

Other people seem to think that External programs that time Powerups are ok and accepted use. Indeed I played a clan two nights ago who i presume were using it by their ability to get quad rather regulary.

Anyway thoughts on what should be banned :

note not what can neccesarily be detected, just what is being seen to be banned. Such as external timing programs. The reason being at LANS it would be easy to detect this.

Ideally, the only thing that is generating visual/audio output for the user should be the (unadulterated) copy of Quake (or whatever game is in question).

However, it is practically impossible, even at LAN parties, to have truely level playing fields, as you'l have some people with 21" monitors, USB mice, GeForce 3d cards, and P700s, while others will be using worn out P166s..

Why use a program to time powerups ?

In teamplay games, they appear every 2min, it's not difficult to time that !

First respawn : 30-45s and then +2min each time, you've got the timer up right with cg_drawTimer 1.

For the modified pak including the bright skin and stuff like radar it's ok to forbid and ban that, but the timing of powerups with external programs, i don't think it's necessary to ban, it's not a BIG cheat if they use that because it's so easy to time that it make no difference to me.

the external program that times..not only times quad, but also the weapons aswell.

timers should be banned cause they are lame

(and thats the technical term

)

If clan1 uses timers and clan2 does'nt clan1 has a clear advantage so they should just be banned full stop.
