Cheaters : Beware!

I am REALLY happy tonight!
Dynamix have bowed to the overwhelming call of the Tribes community to stop cheating.

Their next patch will fix a LOT of issues, including:

custom textures on flags, mines etc

changed model files (*.dts)

stops the auto-beacon cheat

stops 'Shiva' clone cheats

heavy skiing top speed
[/list]

Some people won't like the last one. To them I say 'tough'. Heavies travelling at Warp 9 weren't part of the original game design! :)

The other beauty of this patch is that it will be a 'forced' patch ie. you will have to have the patch to join an updated server. If you don't have the patch, you won't get on the server.

Also Dynamix will be releasing a mod called BasePlus. They call it a test-bed for ideas for Tribes2. In effect, you become a part of the beta-testing for Tribes2. :)

Take a look HERE for more regarding this.

Poker or whoever.. PLEASE say that you'll upgrade the BW servers as soon as this is available.

Looking forward to playing like the old days again

The heavy skiing change is only in the BasePlus mod it will not change for base tribes.
this patch should have come out 6 months ago.

To say Heavy Skiing wasn't part of the original game design is a bit presumptuous. Has there been a statement from Dynamix's saying that it was a mistake in the original programming? The skiing patch seems to me to be more of a beat test for Tribes 2 to see what our reactions are to a slower paced game.

I hope the BasePlus mod will not be put on all the servers and I feel it has the potential to spoil the Tribes tournaments too.

Cant quote any direct sources without searching but afaik the whole skiing ability was a feature they didnt attend. After all, why bother putting scouts into the game when light armours can ski faster than them?

Members of the dev team have said in interviews that 'heavy skiing breaks the game pure and simple' and other such statements which basically state that it was never intended to happen etc.
It would be ridiculous for them to make such a major change to the game so far on in its life based on their opinion of who its evolved. Defences against heavies have evolved too.

lol why bother having scouts at all in tribes 2 having found the best mode of travel in a fps game ever, apart from to annoy hardcore tribers like myself.

It makes me laugh that you moan about Heavy O over a year since people began exploiting it. Heavy O is easy to take out these days, any heavy attacker using a naff route will be blown to pieces by a decent defender's mine and disk combo. Maybe its the public server sydrome of base campers playing against newbies that make people typically raise these outdated issues.

Personally I'm not bothered whether its left in Tribes2 or not. This mod is going to be a test base for Tribes2 as they are going to use the mod to get feedback on whether they feel skiing levels are right or whatever, obviously they want to try and include better vehicle usage in the sequel so they are no doubt trying to create a balance.

Whether you like skiing/Heavy O in general is irrelevant, the fact that the programmers made no effort to remove it verifies that they had no problem with its existence and to even go about considering removing it after a year of its exploitation is plain ridiculous.

I expect the hardcore audience to sweep this mod under the carpet. Its too late into the game's life to be making changes such as these, hence the mod.

I don't care what you lot think about heavy skiing. The main point as far as I'm concerned is that the current crop of major cheating scripts will be nullified. After this patch, if you see your turrets being wiped out by a heavy from behind a hill, it will be because they have learnt the sky patterns. No need to think "Are they using a cheat?"

I don't see any mention of all clientside files being checked by the server.

BarrysWorld will more than likely try the BasePlus mod on public server.

No Poker. As I understand it, there will be CRC checking built into Tribes at the client's end. Some scripters (Zear, VeKToR and a couple others) are looking into a way to 'monitor' from the serverside. Don't know any more about it.

crc checking would have to be both server and clientside for it to work? (else the client could sidestep the server which is effectively what is happening at present). This would appear to be something of a problem having managed to maintain full backward compatibility so far.

I would be surprised to see the introduction of total model checking between client and server as this could be time-consuming and cumbersome? If this was so easy to implement why wasn't it in there at the start, QuakeWorld and altered models was a major issue (glowing packs, quads with spikes etc)so lessons were surely learnt?

I rather expected it to take the form of 'mission-critical' models being checked, but I may be wrong.

Dynamix sorta led the way with changed reticles, something which immediately rang alarm bells with me, but there ya go.
