Okay, here's the plan.
I have a "spare" machine clogged up with all my crap that used to be my internety gateway, now it stands alone occasionally servicing the odd LAN transfer.
My bothersome step-son wants me to rip CDs for him, this takes over my main PC so I am considering moving the CD-RW/DVD onto the "spare" PC so it can continue to burn all night and leave me to play games on the main PC.
I need a replacement DVD-ROM for the main PC, considering it'll only ever be used for installing crap from magazine DVDs/CDs and occasionally watching movies, what reason should I have NOT to buy a el-cheapo unit ?
Dabs do a "Lite-ON" DVD-ROM for £45, the cheapest "name" brand is a Toshiba for £54.
