I'm looking to book a last minute week long break away somewhere. I like hot, but I'm the colour of lillies, and fresh washed linen, and goths and dead people, so preferably somewhere where I won't get red, sunstroke, skin cancer and then dead within the space of 24 hours. I like sunshine, it's just too much murders me.

Me and Kenny aren't really night clubbers, so preferably not somewhere where herds of subhuman beer monkeys chant, drink beer that's trickling down tartlet's nipples, and vomit in your dustbin.

I like seasides, and swimming pools in the sun, but the idea of spending all the time in one resort would drive me scatty. We're definately not "This is our place by the pool where we shall stay until we turn into leather" people. I like visiting little villages, I like buying obscure things that are labelled "local" but most likely aren't, I like buying bottles of local alcohol and then only using them to clean windows or dissolve marbles, and I like eating out at local restuarants (though I fear ever eating seafood abroad because I think it will kill me).

So, any suggestions for places to go, or places to book through?

Cheers my dears!

Arf Arf :(

Are you saying that because you know I'm from Bognor, or is this just uncanny coincedence?

Yeah, maybe I should have mentioned that. I keep hearing good things about Prague, although I have no idea where it is or what its like beyond cheap and nice. I've been to Rhodes, and really liked that (Pefkos, and not falaraki). I wouldn't mind going somewhere more off the beaten holiday track, just as long as its not too expensive.

Why, what an uncanny coincidence! ;)

The towns Nice and Bordeux are both quite nice, as are the areas around them... no idea about prices though, since I haven't been there in a while.

Prague is excellent. I could extoll the virtues of the place all day so I'll just leave it at that.

Ever thought of Croatia? Was a upcoming tourist spot before the troubles and now all thats behind them its the same again. Great mix of people and if you want the beaches, they do have some but it has the atmosphere of Prague (Czech Republic btw :p) and other Eastern European cities. That kind of 1960's black and white Euro arthouse film effect...erm do you get what I mean? :)

Or...ESTONIA! I'll be there next month, Talin is super cheap. 80p equivalent for a four course meal and two pints. Rah. Just brush up on your Cyrillic ;)

Prague's dead cheap, my parents went there and they said there's plenty to see if you're into seeing things and not lying about on holiday, the beer is dirt cheap but you've got no chance of seeing the sea.

I went to Madrid earlier this year and it's fantastic. You'll have great weather at this time of year and it's not too expensive in comparison to a lot of European cities. There's plenty of stuff to see, plenty of places to relax and chill out, it's a very friendly atmosphere and the food's good. It may be a bit long for a week break though and again you'll have no chance of seeing the sea. I've heard good things about Barcelona and Seville, both places are on or near the coast and you'll get good weather in both places.

www.bbc.co.uk/holiday or www.expedia.co.uk might be useful.

I strongly recommend Madrid though, especially if you want to go somewhere that's not full of ex-pats and is horribly tourist-esque.

If you dont like "herds of subhuman beer monkeys chant, drink beer that's trickling down tartlet's nipples, and vomit in your dustbin" you probably wont like Prague. Well not the side of it I have seen! Its okay in the day, but at night it turns into a hive of scum and villany, you have to be cautious.

South of France is nice, if you disregard the fact that its full of French people..

Also great but don't expect perfect weather. You'll get pissed on with rain half the time and melt in the sun the other. Well, I did.

We're going to Southern Ireland anyway for a week for a family wedding (on Kenny's side). It's very nice, but a long shot from being cheap over there.

Oh my NoooOOoOo.

I can see it from my window. I have to go there for work now and again. It is the most grim place on earth next to Margate. Also it takes 45354hours to get on there with the crappy roadworks!

I'll add another vote to prague - it's *really* cheap and there's a lot of cool stuff to see. Most people speak english and/or german there too, so you shouldn't find language too much of a problem.

I second that! Not sure whether the burning down of half the seafront (in mysterious circumstances after the owner had been refused permission to turn it into flats, just the same as happened in Ramsgate and Deal before that.....) improved it by removing some of the tackiness or made it even more grim by having a strip of demolished property behind boards on the seafront.

A couple of years ago I spent a couple of weeks in Slovenia, staying close to Lake Bled. It's pretty cheap from what I remember, and the whole contry is only about the size of wales. It has a small piece of coast line, which is pretty touristy, but most of the country is covered by forests (about 98% if I remember correctly..)
Loads of pretty little towns to visit, with markets and stuff. And you can find bars/clubs etc if you *really* want to..
They don't speak all that much english though... I think the first language is Slovak, then German, before you get to english. It's easy enough to cope though.

Glad to hear Slovenia's nice as I'm off there in October for a long weekend.

Anyway how about the Channel Islands? Guernsey's probably more quaint and less touristy than Jersey as it's smaller. Jersey's more touristy and has a better nightlife.

My experiences are mainly with Guernsey:
Nice beachs, clean sea (slightly cold though :( ), places to visit and still a bit (allbeit small) of nightlife. All on a fairly small island. You'll probably need a car though as public transport isn't that great. Can also daytrip to Herm which has more nice beaches and walks.

Slovene, not Slovak :p

Anyway, beer in pubs is about €1.6 now

Lots of places in this country you know :)

North Devon coastline, or perhaps Cornwall? Cheap, and beautiful.

Stole my idea. I'd also recommend devon/cornwall very beauttiful though stay away from plymouth. In particular the lands area is good with plenty of campsites /bnbs etc plenty of history, local beauty, attractions etc plus a damn nice beach in the form of sennan cove.

See my post in the desktop thread for a picture of sennan cover from last week.

Northern Spain - Bilbao all the way across to La Coruna is full of nice beaches and little towns and the weather is good without being blistering. Good if you can get a car and travel around a bit (Salamanca is a bit further inland but really nice, like a Spanish Oxford, but without the chavs and with good weather and food).

Talin - Estonia.
Reykjavik - Iceland

Well those are three places I'm planning on heading to in the near future.

If you want an unusual beach location perhaps Zlatni Piasaci in Bulgaria would suit?

Or for teh romantic break how bout staying in Padova (Padua as was) setting for Romeo & Juliet then you can use it as a base to visit Venice - ahh the bridge of sighs...

If your in the region for a week or two the Italian alps are very picturesque and have many strange local alcohols which are probably only used for tourist baiting and cleaning spoons...

If you go to Italy I'd wait till september as August is basically mass holiday time plus the weathers usually very good in september...

By not basing yourself in venice you save much dosh - Italian rail system is cheap and effecient - mind the bum pinchers in venice tho...
