Chat Vs Type

Was reading recently about releasing SWG on the Xbox and I realised that the Xbox has no keyboard (honest I've checked the box a hundred times it ain't got one one) it uses the communicator headset.

Which made me think, what would be better in an mmorpg, having to type your chat or speak it?

Chat is a real eye-opener... especially when you realise the player with the l33t name and attitude is actually a squeaky-voiced pre-teenager :)

People get angry lots and almost want to scream when people scam or grief others so don't think it'll be very good that way. Won't be too clever for roleplayers I think.
Nor for those of us who like to play late into the night and will find ourselves needing to whisper everything.
Or indeed for grouping with people from different nations and communication problems.
Last but not least, headsets are the ultimate geek tool right? when you see people wearing microphones and playing counterstrike and you just think.. "Don't take it so seriously man! it's just a game!".

Anyways, can't see much positive things about using headsets except for when you're dying and need help quick, a lot faster to yell "HELP!" than to type it. But really not much. And in daoc you can just type /y which is pretty fast.

First Firearms praccy we had using Battlecom ended up in hysterics. We had my broad Barnsley accent, 3-4 squeeky teenagers, a southern texas drawller + 2 porno-type dutch peeps.

Listen to a teenager whine when you tell him politely that friendly fire is far from friendly in a loud yorkshire accent. :p

you could tell that from their accents! What were they doing, whispering 'Heh Bebe, Heh Bebe' or something?

ROFL!

While that I think that communicating by typing has its obvious advantages of anomymity for those who are 12 or have badly spoken english (scousers for example :p) I think that when organising team based combat (I'm especially thinking of Ghost Recon on the Xbox, but im imagining a use in DAoC as well) voice communication is faster, simpler and clearer.

And bad for the roleplayers?

Come off it lad!

Ive been playing p&p roleplaying games for years I never typed or wrote anything down there, in fact the budding thesps I used to play with rather liked playing in char, voice mannerisms and all :)

Thing is I think that some days I'd want to play one way yet the next day the other, kind of depends on your mood like when you want to solo and when you want to group.

I also think it would bring peeps closer, but then I was always the gregarious chatty type.

My guild in an older mmorpg used roger wilco to communicate.
It was fun :)

It's too horrible to contemplate, hearing someone's real voice will totally spoil the atmosphere.

Why not just use those voice changers? If you are a troll then your voice should get changed to a slow deep growl, Luri's could sound squeeky and of course Blademasters should sound like Quentin Crisp.

Throw in voice change software and I think its a lot better.

I think people like the fact that no one know who you are when you type.

Just make sure you cant set your luri's voice to the Soviet-Bloc Woman's Shot Put Troll setting :p

Well in true p&p roleplay you are all gathered in a room with the sole purpose of playing the game so speaking in voice would not be a problem. I would think it rather odd though to be sat alone in a room with a pc speaking in character, with neighbours/flatmates or whoever listening in and thinking you're a bit 'odd'.

But that's just my take on it :)

Yeah but everyone whom I tell about me playing online mmorpgs thinks I'm odd anyway....

... and that goes for the BW general forum guys as well so we dont really have anything to lose :p
