Changes to BW public servers...

Obviously the new base ctf server has been popular (and gives 8v8 and 10 v10 options).

A few other changes like team damage always on etc.

Any thoughts, changes still needed?

Yup, the CTF base's are popular, couldn't get on! - Any chance of another ;-)

One comment, it'd be nice to have TD at least voteable on the C&H server. Keep TD on by default by all means, but if the majority want it off...

With its present locked 'on' state there are a couple of maps where a lot of players have trouble getting a positive score. On a memorable game of 'Skyjack' last night I think both teams adverage scores were negative!

Que lots of moaning about how TD on's the only way to play ;-)

I'd remove Broadside because its a dull defensive map and caps only occur when one team is much better then the other. Bring Iceridge, Raindance and Rollercoaster into the map cycle, you have to vote for them to actually play them for whatever reason. Increase the player limit on the 2nd server to 20. 10vs10 games that the americans use are far better suited to Tribes then 8vs8 that we seem to be stuck with. Might want to throw in something like CC into the map cycle

The servers seem to be constantly on broadside :/
Leave it on the 8v8 server if you must, but as it will usually last the distance it is on the server for the majority of the time.

Made a few more changes:

Base map cycle fixed, it was skipping some missions.
Point taken on Broadside, but its still a popular map, I'll have a think about it only being on the one base server.
New 'all ctf' server which runs base+opencall+balanced.
New 'Team Air Combat' server up as a test, it looks good fun and seems popular already.
Client limits - some want bigger games, some smaller, I think we have a reasonable balance with a 20 and a 16?

Opinions/comments welcome as always.

Hmm, to add to that I don't know what it'll take to get ppl playing on the OpenCall missions - I personally really wanna play them but no-one comes on :[

Good good.

Poker - If it's possible I think having a voting option to kick someone (like a TK) should only take place in that team. This would make thing's a lot easier for everybody as atm it takes ages to get the other team to acknowledge that you have some arse on your side killing everyone.

Also, I played AirWARS on the BW server last night and had a very entertaining time playing it, it's a very funny MOD :)

Crashes been reported back to the mod authors, working on it now.

There is a 'team check' in place for kicking already.

I'm looking into anti-TK code in general, I think I have a good method for the new version of BWAdmin, but time will tell. I'll have a look at the TAC setup too to see what can be done on there.

The server with the opencall/balanced/base maps on seems to be full mostly now, is it just being used as another base server never actually playing any of the others types?

Ivan you shouldn't be having any problems kicking TKers....

Played some TAC last night, loads of fun! Try it if you havn't already! Its still early days I know, but there are a couple of problems.

Firstly server crashes/drops, it seems that the server is restarting quite regularly. Error messages of 'the server went down' A bit dull when you team's HPC is about to cap after dogfighting all the way from the enemy flag. This is prolly down to the TAC script/server code though, so hopefuly the team will update it soon.

Secondly any type of TK'er on a team will cause that team to loose, as the game is so teamplay oriented. Could we try the scripted vote/kick. (I assume this gives the killee the chance to punt the offender off the server after 'n' number of TK's)

Nope, no problems at all ;) I try and control it though :D

Its just a shame when there's an obvious TK'r on a server and that team can't get enough votes to get rid of them. Fact of life I guess.

TAC authors are rewriting their anti-TK code right now.

Any suggestions on the best way to keep the servers clear of TKers more than welcome.

If you are considering removing broadside from 1 of the 2 base servers the 1st one would be a better choice, as defensive maps are even less suited to crowded servers.

While we're on the subject of BW servers, its seems the quality of the public Tribes servers has diminished over the last week, the servers seem to be rather laggy now which is unfortunate, it could just be a temporary thing but I thought I'd mention it because its been like this for a week now. I haven't noticed any problem on their servers for other games.

Wonder if its got anything to do with the 999 CS/Quake3 servers they seem to run ;)

TAC servers... too CPU hungry, thanks Fusion I'll get it sorted.

If there isn't a short term solution to this server lag I'd think it would be a good idea to remove the TAC servers until they can be put back up without lagging the base servers, especially as TAC seems to be more of a short term novelty then anything else.

Alot of people love the TAC Mod, including me.
If you think the bw base servers are too laggy for you dont play on them.
There are alot of great french tribes servers.

The only french server i know of is WOL which is excellent because it doesn’t suffer from lag like the bw servers do, problem is its only really used for clan matches.

Its always nice to play on a local uk server for the ping but if your going to lag to death it defies the point and you might as well play on EU and US servers where things like teamwork and defending aren’t alien concepts.

I enjoyed TAC for about 30mins till the novelty wore off, but one of the main things that spoilt if for me was that its full of bugs.

Whether you like TAC or not, it doesn't deny the fact that they have crippled the base servers to a state where they are vastly inferior to what they used to be.

Why substitute quality for quantity? If you can find a way of running them without lagging the base servers then great, otherwise it seems a little daft. Especially as BW are allegedly comitted to provided the best possible servers in the UK

Is the TAC server running on the same box/cpu as the main CTF base servers ? If so perhaps they should be shuffled off to a seperate one where they can't affect the base servers.

I don't have any stats, but judgeing by how hard it is to find a slot on BW TAC, it is almost as popular as CTF, certainly more so than any other BW tribes servers. People seem to like the teamplay...

Zach try out World Tribes .fr

Not many peeps are on their usually but that can change with a little input from some UK players. I sometimes ping better there than BW and UK servers.

I also like SCHNEEman and the MnO server, 'cause my ping's are quite good there too :)

Any chance of an update on the server situation?

Sniping on those servers is beyond a joke these days.

Although The TAC mod is good fun, the frequent appearance of the phonejack reminds me of when I had a 33k modem, however BD Wizard claims the lag problem had been fixed in the latest Beta, check this thread.

TAC servers haven't been on the same cpu as the base servers since the weekend. The code is rather cpu intensive so they have been 'isolated'.

Quality hasn't been substituted for quantity. Some of the less utilised servers have been removed to make way for the very popular TAC, they were put alongside the base servers initially but when I spotted how cpu hungry they were we got them moved as soon as a better configuration was settled upon.

Any feedback on the current setup welcome as usual.
