I still use an old version of MusicMatch, it originally came with my Diamond Rio MP3 Player, it was limited to 50 recordings, I complained as to why they are selling crippled software with a perfectly good product, and they sent me a key code - yay !

I use AudioCatalyst. As it's the only one I have and I really don't give a shit. VBR sounds like utter turd tho.

I must admit tho, 320kbps sounds pretty damn good on my setup. SB Live!, Mission 733i floorstanders, Marantz PM-66 KI-Signature amp, Linn Biwires speaker cable.

If I download MP3s I won't bother listening to em on my PC, I'll burn em to CD and listen to them on me CD player.

That said I think my CD player's on its last legs, cos it's starting to skip a load of tracks and portions of tracks, on both burnt CDs and bought ones.

:(

Hehe, actually it's perfectly legal, and you're entitled to by law. Sony etc is actually breaking the law by slapping these (albeit shit) security systems on their CDs, which try to prevent you copying the CD.

Infact, iirc they're not allowed to call them cd's because of all the copy protection. Phillips who own the cd patent (again iirc) have said that it doesnt clasify as a cd hence aren't allowed to call it so. Also, all this copy protection toss fucks up macs, and apple have said they wont sort it cos they're not technically cd's and so the users putting them in the cd drives are at fault..

iirc ;)

Hardly a high fidelity setup then really. Which is why I can still tell the difference between 320bps (yes, highest possible quality mp3) and the real CD

BUHHHHHH

Get some real speakers, especially as you've got a semi decent amp amp

Errrrr, Mission are quality speakers. Having said that I've been eyeing up the Mordaunt-Short MS908's...especially in Cherry, will fit the decor of this room a treat :D Only gripe I have about Mordaunt is they're quite bass heavy iirc. I'll obviously have to go test drive them before even seriously considering parting with the readies.

Anyway, what are 'real' speakers in yours eyes then.

Oh, and my point was he is hardly able to comment on the higher end of sound reproduction when he's running off cambridge works, which are nothing more than PC speakers

I regret encoding some mp3's in VBR, you can tell the difference between songs in VBR, CBR and the original CD.

I hate VBR...I also used to get issues with 320bps.

Well, you're obviously all doing some wrong with VBR, because mine sound spanktastic. And Perp, I never claimed I had "a high fidelity setup" - I'm no audiophile, perhaps I don't have a *very* keen ear, but this setup suits me down to the ground.

So... there. :p

Does no-one use cd players in, like a music stereo system type thing anymore?

I personally have a very nice system which plays cd's in my lounge, but is piped into the kitchen and our bathroom (but not the main bathroom, or my daughter would make us listen to the fecking Tweenies while she's in the bath)

Yeah but you were arguing with Perp that VBR was better quality than 320bps CBR, maybe they sound identical on your sound system, but they dont to everyone. VBR sounds okay, but its not as good as CBR. And CD's simply sound better than mp3's.

CD's always have sounded better than mp3's and always will.

Well of course they do - every form of compression is lossy to a certain extent.
