CD-RW's and Copy Control

Right, this is slighty shady on the legal side - but the legality of Copy Controlled CDs is as well, so I'm going to post it anyway. It is, after all, in the interests of me actually buying CDs...

Various models of CD-RW will read around Copy Control on new CDs. In the interests of fair use, and more specifically because I don't have any means of playing CDs other than through my computer (ironic? heh), I'm looking for one.

However, from a technical point of view, are CD-RWs like those from Lite-On going to always be able to read around it, or will there be future copy control that will block out on Lite-On players? I don't want to spend £40+ only to get blocked out again in a few months time.

Also, other than Lite-On, are there better products that will pull the same trick that I should consider paying more for?

Thankies.

In my opinion, if I pay £15 for a Compact Disc (and I emphasize Compact Disc, not those sony produced fake things) then I am also buying the right to make a personal copy of that Compact Disc.

I f I want to make a personal backup, whether it be as another disc, a tape or a mini disc, i'll do it, as it is my right to do so.

In answer to your question though shovel, DVD roms can read "copy protected" discs, so it may be worth your while investing in one of those.

Not sure what DVD Rom you have, but in my experience they are actually far more confused by it than CD-RWs

I have a Pioneer Slot Loader, family has a LiteOn of some flavour, both of them get immensely confused at the make up of the CD - recognising 10 second long data tracks and so forth.

Currently alongside I have a Creative CDRW, and while it will eventually recognise the correct structure of the disk, it wont rip it without the inserted "pops and clicks".

I have an old LiteOn 24x CDRW, and it didn't even blink when I made my MP3's of Hail to the Thief. So I wouldn't worry about future technologies too much. If you do, you'll never buy anything, just in case.

I recently installed Sim City4 deluxe (dont ask) and my pioneer slotin DVD wouldnt even read the second cd.
I tried it at a friends place and the installer crashed on the second CD.
We poped the cd in a CD-rom drive and it worked perfectly.

Seen the same things with those fake music cds.
Found the best/fastest thing to read/rip them with is my trusty plextor 16x scsi cdrom

Sadly the only way to find out is to try, firmwares and component changes in subsets of models can make a difference - best to check the likes of cdfreaks and cdrinfo for more information and community feedback on any devices you're considering.
