Well, first off - no sympathy at all from this here git. No siree...

On the other hand, I do hate it when this happens
smile.gif
and before you believe all the doom and gloom as spread about by our fellow posters, let me clue you in:

CDR's have something in the region of 5 individual 'layers' with the actual data layer being in the middle (thats number 3). It is very rare that a scratch penetrates that far, serving only to distort the laser beam enough so that it can't read complete packets of data (the equivalent of it staggering around the CD surface like a drunk after 10 pints of meths).

However, there is a solution. CD scratches are only (usually) very very slight in terms of depth. You can *buy* a special CD recovery solution.

And when I say solution, I mean a liquid. Its a small bottle of transparent almost glutinous liquid that you apply to the *entire* underside of the CD. This magical stuff then seeps into the scratched areas, and is formulated so that it creates a near-as-dammit perfect optical track again (like having your window's reglazed or something).

You let it dry, and voila - your CD should be readable again.

There are three hitches however;

Firstly, I can't remember what it is called.
Secondly, I can't remember who sells it.
Thirdly, if your scratches penetrated to the data later itself, you really are screwed.

So, there you go. A helpful (possibly) message from the guy who *never* does such things as illegally copy software. Ever. Really

Well, from the picture, two things come to mind:

Firstly, that CD is completely shagged. You haven't just got a minor disruption in the top layer and coating, you've actually had it removed. Possible uses now include: 21st century ash tray, MoonBase Alpha stlye coaster, or mini-dartboard.

Secondly, that level of damage is *deliberate* - this is not the result of some careless postman, or of it falling down the wrong chute - the actual data layer has been ripped off - looks like a heavy abrasive/tearing motion was involved - and I can say with almost 100% certainty, that either the postal service are now taking it upon themselves to eradicate piracy, or the guy who sent it to you never put any data on it, and to cover up the fact he sent a duff CD, ripped the data layer off.

But, what is this? look at the right hand image, that scrawly red writing.. interesting.. I can just make out...war..z -- Cool! is that a new band of something?

um looking at the disc, well, maybe some of the data can be recovered maybe. Luck will play a role
smile.gif

Looks like that the TOC looks intact, so the part that is damaged is the data.
So, theoryetically, (SPelling
smile.gif
) You maybe be able to get some of the data, by running a program like adaptecs scandisc?? . Which comes with most cd writers. But really, yep its buggered.
Easyier to get another copy?
Craigio

OPPS and also, is there data on that part of the disc, if there is only say 100-200 mb on the disc, the data wouldnt be on that part.

No no! don't listen !

Indeed the Table of Contents (the bane of any software copier) is intact *from what I can see of the CDR* - however, the read-out sector is completely buggered.

CDR's /CDRW's are divided into four sections of data; the Read-In, the TOC, the actual data and the Read-Out.

Generally, in order for the Read-Out to function, you shouldn't have a whacking great rip in the actual physical data layer.. like, erm, you have
smile.gif

There is a way to recover the data of course, he is right on that point - but you won't find *any* PC CDROM or other home user intended CD device capable. Go and see DERA, or Box

I take it you have a recent drive and are able to read other CDR's?

I've had shagged disc's before but have managed to get them to read.
