CD keys

Hi,
Earlier this evening a guild mate told me that he could log onto the game without having his CD Key typed into the appropriate box (the one that pops up when you first start the game up). I check this and found I could also get into the game.

To my (non technical) mind, this seems like a major security problem. Can anyone shed any light on this?

just made an attempt at that myself and yes, there's no sign of the security cap which normally greets us so well, seems again another translation of a patch has been botched :S

it's no bug since cd-key is only needed when activating an account, after that anything or even nothing suffices to startup the game. Think it's done by Mythic caus selling/trading of accounts is allowed in the US and thus ppl might not have the original cd-key anymore at hand.

that may well be true but i noticed that if you try reinput your toa key in for example after you have booted it without the key it no longer recognises the old key for the game, i tryed this with SI and normal daoc, all of it reacts in the same way.

The key issue is that i have actually reinstalled the game from scratch today and i could boot the game up fresh from a new installation and no key was required. So i guess we'll see what right now has to say about that in the coming hours

Although i still can't actually play it after getting drivers n direct x reinstalled due to renderer creation errors :S

Hello,

This is not a bug, you just need your cd key to register to our server the first time.
Once your toa is activated on your account you do not have to enter your cd key each time you play the game.

Seems that with 1.68 i can boot the game up to the server list without using my cd key. Also once this is done the game no longer recognises my toa cd key yet accepts my normal daoc cd key to boot atlantis to the server list.

Not 1.68, it's always been that way (or for ages and ages anyway). It doesn't matter anyway, you still need your account name and pass to login to the game, that's where the security checks are at, the CD key is only used when registering an account to make sure you actually bought the game, after that it's worthless. Tho yes, the fact that pointless prompt to enter your CD key comes up is silly (tho I suppose they needed *somewhere* to stick the "perform full file scan" option )

havent ever needed to type in CD key, at least not since i joined euro beta anyway
