I have a spare case, and I just want to know if I can test the power supply by plugging in the power lead?

Only I dropped a screw in the powersupply
and I ending up buying a new case for my current PC. ( don't ask)

/am now thinking of using it

Thanks

Make sure that screw is out before you add power to it. Use a well insulated or plastic tool to do it.

In fact, ignore all this. I'm not advising anybody to open up a PSU and poke about. Given the cost of them these days - chuck it out and buy a new one.

It's not exactly rocket science :)

Just take it out, take off the cover, turn it over and shake out the screw.

So long as you only hold it by its casing you wont have any trouble.

Erm..are PSU's bad things to poke around with then? I've taken apart a couple and ripped them to shreds and then put them back together. Even re-wired one to make the connectors longer.
I didn't think that it would matter what you do to them as long as they're unplugged and you don't break anything inside them.

I will try to get it out, tried to shake it but no luck, may give it to a shop to do.

I don't want to buy a new case or power supply (is replacing p/s difficult  )

I had my fan1 lead plugged into fan2, it kept powering down, at first I thought my power supply was faulty, hence I messed around with it, and ended up dropping a screw into it. :twak:

My power supply is a 300watt, and the case is better quality compred to the one I have now. So I'd like to use it.

I'm hearing about 350watt power supplys even 400, for athlon systems, should I go go down this route.

Thanks for the comments

300w is ample for a modern system.

Replacing a PSU is piss easy. Just pay attention to how the power connectors plug into your motherboard, though tbh modern boards will only let you plug it in the correct way.

An un-related article on Overclockers says:

Opening up the PSU is a DANGEROUS thing to do, so do it at your own risk and don't come back crying at me. Please disconnect the power plug while you are playing around with the settings, unless you have a death wish. You can remove the charges stored in the capacitor by turning on the PC while the PSU is not plugged to the main. You will see the fan spins for half a second or so.

Your choice, but if you're happy paying a pro to do it, then do so, imo.

I opened the power supply without breaking the seal, and out it popped. I was worried the P/s was knackered so brimming with confidence I put it in my current computer, and it worked, even better it sounds quieter than the other one, so I'm gonna leave it in there. :)

I'm just waiting for the abit kr7 to come out, with the kt266a chip. Then I can build a uber' machine.
