Cars

I've started to look about at cars because I need one preferably the day I pass my test, otherwise I'm going to spend even longer being bored at home and posting 3000000 times a day on here, so I'm getting ahead of myself and looking at prices etc etc. I know autotrader, but can you helpful people point me in the direction of other places to get used/new cars and whatnot online? thanks boss!

Places like that are risky, you never know whats been done to the car (could have had a big crash or something).

Theres a register for crashs, but theres quite a number that are not registerd. If you have the cash I would advise you to get the AA out to check a car you may buy from a private deal and check the register anyway.

The best place is prolly auto trader, maybe loot, and the local paper. Hell, maybe even ebay :).

I'm only looking at prices. I've got a cousin who is a used car dealer so I'll probably sort something out with him.

Industry standard pricing guide.

Which is also frighteningly innacurate for a lot of cars.

Stick to autotrader or maybe even adtrader for up to date prices.

What is your budget, and what kind of car do you want, mank!

The Parkers guide is OK, but it certainly isn't the industry standard.

The book all the used car dealers use is called Glasses Guide, and you won't find a copy cos they are preciously guarded. You do have an inside track though because of your cousin, use him, he'll probably have a copy.

Also if he is any good then the cheapest way to get a decent car is to go to the auctions. There are some real bargains available, but you have to know exactly what you're buying because there is very little recompenserif you get a dud.

I guess the best way would be to test drive a few so you know what you want, and then look for an auction with that type in. Make sure your cousin comes with you so you don't buy a dog.

I'm not all that fussed, but it needs to be less than 1.0 or 1.2, perhaps 1.4 depending on insurance. My budget is £4K at the very most, I'd rather something under £3K. It depends as my parents are getting a new car as well and have set aside £10K for both. Should they save a bit of knicker on theirs I might be able to push the boat out for mine. I don't want anything too old because I doubt I'll be changing it particularly quickly. Something small, preferably 3 door and ideally a VW Polo or perhaps a Golf, but I'm not that fussed so long as it's in pretty good nick, isn't a death trap, doesn't make me look like an old granny and I can put a CD player in it.

If I won the lottery, brand new indigo blue VW Golf thx.

I imagine that when I do get a car it'll be through him and I'm sure he'll find me a good deal. Auctions never struck me but I know a couple of people who have got cars there and stuff. Cheers RB.

Get a Fiesta or something that's cheap to insure and get spares for.

Boring & cheap > flash & expensive for first cars.

Fiesta's are shit, I've been warned off Ford by a few people as well.

I don't want flash & expensive, I just was decent & not too expensive over old granny & dirt cheap

Fiestas are indeed shite. My recommendation would be to get an older executive car, like a BMW 5series, or an older Merc. Much more reliable, much more comfortable to drive. Dunno about insurance though, maybe your Dad can insure it and add you as a named driver.

It'd still be far too much, if I find a BMW 5series for under £4K you can have it.

or not. I thought the 5series was a newer model, I know fuck all about cars :)

Fiestas or Festers as I've known them are indeed complete fucking toss. My first car was a Fiesta Popular Plus with a whopping 950cc engine. Total plastic pigwank its a total learnermobile that I gladly drove into a wall at 40mph one day.

As omni said tho (sorry Jonaldo? :)) don't get a flash one for your first car as you'll prob wreck it. Mind you, I've had 8 cars and trashed them all so fking ignore me :) Bikes > cars!

Where'd you get flash from? I'm looking at 7 or 8 year old Golf's, not bloody Ferrari.

Anyway, I won't crash it because I'm a good driver.

Ignore the really old ones, the ones from about 1990 are very good cars, and well worth a look. I really would recommend staying away from small cars, they're crap in crashes, and aren't as fuel economical as you would think.

Whatever you buy, do a very thorough web search on things to look out for, ie design faults, life of various components, tyre wear, if its likely to smoke, etc. Newsgroups are good for this.

PS Volvo 850 is a very very good car, I had one, loved it to bits. Very reliable, boring to look at, but really nice to drive, and very safe.

I'm a fucking appalling driver. Used to get proper road rage until this year. I got out the car and nearly leathered an off duty copper last year, had to show him my badge to get off the hook ffs.

I used to get taxi's into town quite often and the driver I usually had drove a BMW 5 series and he loved it. It was actually very smooth for an oldish car, it was at least 10 years old but in tip-top condition. He traded it in on auto-trader and got an old Merc, S series I think (which is the best?) and that was unbelievably smooth to ride in. The engine was quiet as a mouse too.

I see your point about small cars, but they're cheaper than saloon's usually and wouldn't the engine be bigger? I can only go for 1.0 and 1.2 at a push because of insurance.

Not had a quote done, tried a couple of insurance companies online and neither would give me a quote and I can't be fucking phoning up. I'm on my Mum's insurance as a named driver atm, we got it quite cheap because they messed up the quote and we insisted they had to use it.

My Dad drives a 1.8 or something and his insurance is £120 per year... mind you, he's 57.

My point is you can buy a small car for £2000, or a big car for £1500, and make up the difference on the insurance.

S-class is the better Merc

Get your dad to insure it, and put u on as a named driver. Until you're earning a wad, its pointless trying to accumulate a no-claims bonus (you'll probably have a crash anyway)
