Carracter shadows

Ok this might seem a little petty but I seen some screan shots from HL where carracters have drawn shadows instead of dark blobs under them .

I searched every where I can think but I can't find anything on it, has any one seen this and if so any idea's what needs to be done to get my own shadows on carracters ?

they did it coz it looked crap and buggered up ppls pcs, if you wanna know wat it looks like try entering r_shadows 1 in either an old version of HL or in Blue-Shift. You'lll see what i mean when u do.
