So I had the fraud department call me earlier asking if it was me trying to pay £400 to Ryanair and £30 to O2 and 25p to some american foundation.

Luckily they cancelled the ryanair transaction but the £30 O2 one was accepted.

The card has been cancelled and I'm getting a new one.

Will I be able to get the £30 back? anyone on here been a victim of card fraud?

I don't know how they stole the details, but i've got to phone them back in a couple of days so i'll find out then hopefully, whats the most likely way they stole my details?

Also why the hell would someone use my card to pay 25p?!? lol

Phone your bank, you will get the money back np but it might take a couple of weeks. They give you something to sign to confirm you didn't make the transaction yourself.

I had two 15 quid payments to O2 taken out, which I noticed and then reported. Funny enuff the bank questioned some Ryanair payements also when I let them know but I made em myself (so it must be common). It always the same things, O2, Oystercard topups, etc. The make small payment to check the card is active and if you don't notice they clear it out. They have to be quick with me after payday, I do pretty good job of clearing it out myself.

As the above poster explained, that's their benchmark into establishing the card is valid. Next they follow up with a small charge (the 30ish expense), and then they just try their luck.

Careful where you shop online, what computers you use when you authorise transactions, and moreso, who's wifi you're using when banking/shopping online. Most people would figure out a phishing site in seconds, but there are people which know fckall about using a computer and the internet, so they get tricked.

Not to mention the usual antivirus/antispyware advice.

I've not been a victim of this myself thankfully but your card could of been cloned, was a petrol station near where i used to work where a lot of this went on.

I think you should get your money back as if i recall correctly visa debit and credit cards atleast are covered by this but as i said i have not experienced it myself.

The most likely would be swiping a copy at some cash register inside a shop where somebody pretends to pick something up off the floor when infact they are actually cloning your card instead.

I have been where my card got copied from a petrol garage near where I live and some months later they sent my card details to romania where they were swiping my card for the max take out each day for 5 days.

thankfully i noticed it at an early stage where I could not take any money out. I did indeed get everything back within 1 week but a pain in the arse for not having a card for 1 week is annoying.

if it was made over the internet/phone/postal etc, and it was done without your knowledge, then legally you must be given it back under the distance selling regulations.

source

Payment by card
21. - (1) Subject to paragraph (4), the consumer shall be entitled to cancel a payment where fraudulent use has been made of his payment card in connection with a contract to which this regulation applies by another person not acting, or to be treated as acting, as his agent.

(2) Subject to paragraph (4), the consumer shall be entitled to be recredited, or to have all sums returned by the card issuer, in the event of fraudulent use of his payment card in connection with a contract to which this regulation applies by another person not acting, or to be treated as acting, as the consumer's agent.

(3) Where paragraphs (1) and (2) apply, in any proceedings if the consumer alleges that any use made of the payment card was not authorised by him it is for the card issuer to prove that the use was so authorised.

(4) Paragraphs (1) and (2) shall not apply to an agreement to which section 83(1) of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 applies.

(6) For the purposes of this regulation -

"card issuer" means the owner of the card; and

"payment card" includes credit cards, charge cards, debit cards and store cards.

bolded paragraphs almost certainly will apply.

i was a victim of credit card fraud. some bastard spend 1.2k with thompson and a couple of hundred with ryanair. funny thing is, they also setup a direct debit to pay it back!

I would say the 25p was them testing the details, and i have had this before with Lloyds and they have been top with it refund all the money within 48 hours normally before i get a new card. I even had it on a card i had not used for 18 months so had never made a payment so should of had late fees ect but they took wrote them off as well.

Cloning is less of a risk nowadays - phishing/spyware or online retailer compromised dbs are more common.

Cash is king for petty expenses. I only use my plastic for ATMs and limited online shopping (when I can't get the item/service by cash or payment on delivery).

I had £200 taken off my card earlier in the year by someone in Canada. Natwest were really good about it, got a refund within a week. They also caught the guy that had been skimming the cards, some twat at the local shell garage, he is in jail now :)

I don't use my card in petrol stations any more, they are rife with thieving *****.

I do all my on-line shopping on my Credit Card and i do not really care if the card gets scammed as Lloyds are always helpful, then i just pay it off at the end of the month. I do not like using my current account card anywhere now, it got scammed in a petrol station and its amazing how bad it feels with no access to money.

Never suffered it myself but my missus has 3 times (she's careless at best) and she managed to get all the money back.
