Card Declined! Argh!

I have been trying to sign up to the subscription (i was on the trial thing, but wanted to get the webspace before it ran out). I did the 'cancel and use new subscription immediately' option - so my trial was cancelled. I have entered all my details correctly but I get told that my card was declined! I also tried numerous variations on the details to no avail. I realise this can be a problem with the bank, but I have ordered from Amazon.co.uk plenty of times recently. I know my card is in date and I have enough money in the account (it's a Solo card). I also had this problem with Play.com - card being declined. What is going on? Has anyone else had this problem?

1. Do they accept solo as a form of payment?

Yes. It is in the drop-down list, and it has the 'issue number' box.

Then you can do nothing till you phone your bank. You may have run out of cash, someone may have been using your card and its under suspect of fraud, or there may just be an error with your banks auth system.

What right this minute? You can use your card and then have it declined the next minute. Card authorisation services are wierd.

It might be because you can't use your card so quickly after one transaction? Try again in an hour or so perhaps.

It's a trick to make you buy lots from Amazon to test it.

Solo really is a joke.

Ask your bank for a real debit method. Either that or don't subscribe :D

Solo has worked for poor old me for a few years now.

Yeah, it's worked fine for me (except when it does this). I sent one of those query forms to Game, and a helpful chap called Dave replied. He said I should try it without the issue number, if it doesn't work then I need to call the bank.

*picks up phone*

Solo is necessary for under 18s and those who can't be trusted with switch.

What bank is it with? Try to contact them, see what they say. When you filled in your card details, did it ask you for the CVC (3 digit security code on the sig slip) number on the back? Some online transactions don't ask for it and if the transaction goes for authorisation it may decline on the basis that the security digits weren't obtained.

Just a thought.

Yeah, I tried submitting it with the digits and without but it got declined both times.

I'm with the Halifax.

Perhaps because the transaction has tried to be pushed through many times with different details something has thought "hang on, potential fraud". It's possible.

All i can suggest is get someone else to pay with their card and give them the dorrah.

Additionally, HBOS are good with authorisation and aren't too picky unless the transactions go above a few hundred quid. The royal bank and Natwest are a nightmare - almost all of their "customer not present" transactions go for authorisation and they're very picky about the details. Not necessarily a bad thing, but still a bit of a pain for the cardholder.

I phoned the bank and they said I didn't have enough money in my account.

I guess those Amazon transactions cost more than I thought.....

Thanks for the help everybody, I'll try again soon.

400 quid a month? That's harsh. I guess it was different when I got mine...ohh...about 8 years ago now.

It's odd that they require that much going through the account as it's a debit card...as .z. is finding out, if the money's not in your account then the card's declined so why you need a certain amount of cash flow is odd.

Maybe it's cos of the fact it can also be used as a cheque guaruntee card.

what bank?

I find that hard to believe since you can overdraw on a switch account (and write cheques) so it's effectively a credit product. Additionally, a 16 year old would find it incredibly difficult to supply money laundering documents to prove their identity (driving licence, other bank statements, utility bills, council tax bills, inland revenue docs) to aquire a credit product. Hence solo / Visa Electron.

I could be wrong tho, just never heard of a 16 year old with a switch card.

It was with Natwest, who I'm still with despite the fact that when I went to them with a cheque for my first two weeks wages for 600 quid and asked for a little bit more on my over draft (just 20 quid to go out that evening and celebrate) they declined me. ****s.
