In a massive fit of sod's law, I filled my car up with petrol and taxed it for 6 months 2 days before I crashed. I obviously won't be getting the cost of the fuel back but I know I can get a refund on the tax. My question is, will I be able to get a refund over the phone without giving them a notice of destruction? Since the tax starts tomorrow I want to get as much back from it as I can.

Can't you just declare it SORN?
Think you send back your v5 or whatever it is declaring your not the legal owner any more and it auto gets calculated by the dvla now.

Cause it's not a car any more so you can't declare it sorn it's not a legal vehicle any more.

But phone the dvla or the tax people tomorrow to get it right.

You should get a full refund. I'm sure you will be able to get it retro if you get a letter from your insurance stating its beyond economic repair.

Declare it scrapped and dvla auto calculate it.
