I've just bought Tribes (yes I know it's a bit late!) and dutifully installed it and downloaded the patch. The game patches fine etc but whenever I try and run the .exe I get blue-screen-of-death... This happens a few seconds after I double click. Has anyone had experience of this, can anyone help me out? I played this game over a lan a while back and really want to play over the net ;)

my pooter =

Athlon 650
MSI K7M pro mobo
126meg pc133 memory
Voodoo 3 3000 gfx
vortex2 sound
diamond modem
win 98(se) - going to 2k when I get my evaluation copy at the w/e

ta in advance!

Hmm, normally tribes only bluescreens at startup when theres a problem in a script or mod youve installed, not heard of it crashing out for no reason.

Im guessing your voodoo3 has the latest drivers, etc?

Cant really think whats causing this in a brand new install, try reinstalling it and running it without the patch being applied?

To find out if it is your system download the demo. I found out about tribes a few months ago and it is prbably my fave game, i got the game real cheap and i can't wait for T2. IT IS GOING TO RULE ANY OTHER TEAM GAME OUT THERE :)

well imo Tribes rules any other game in terms of teamplay, Ever tried to play as HOF (Heavy offense) and get to the enemy base by walking? You have to use an H/LPC. The graphics may be a little past it but T2's gfx are sweet.

No offence m8, but yer Tribes knowledge is lacking a little.

HoF means Heavy on Flag.
HO means Heavy Offence.

No-one uses LPC's any more.

Why walk when you can ski?

And for the whole Blue Screen thing, do this m8.

a) Make sure your LAN card is securely in the slot.

Try it.

If that's fucked, take out the LAN card and try it without.

c) Re-install it.

d) Uninstall it, take out the LAN card and drivers for the LAN card, then install it.

e) Format C:/

f) Shoot MeanMrMustard then yourself.

I know a lot of people that use LPC's, you can only have a certain number of HPC's out at a time (1 i think). They are faster, easier to control at low level as to avoid base rockets.

Good question but in my expirience, trying to get a Heavy armour up to a resonable speed is pretty f00kin hard (i have only been playing a month or 2 so still a n00b but i can't see that skiing with a heavy can be anywhere near as easy as with light). sure you ain't gunn walk down that hill you will ski down it but it is quite hard to get up any speed enless you start very high up. The only way i can get any reasonable speed up is by disk jumping then useing a health kit, that's 1 less health kit you could use when rapeing their base. I would much rather use an HPC.

Tribes 2's maps are going to be so huge and there is going to be a cap on skiing for the larger armours that Skiing to the enemy base is not going to be feasible.

Personally i don't touch heavy armours, they are too cumbersome and slow, my faves are taken by medium and light (i have a medium as a turret destroyer) I only flag cap when i see i can't fail. I usually escort flag cappers. my laser rifle just claimed 28 peeps an hour ago.

Please note: All my knowledge is of BASE Tribes (non-modded), so anything you consider to be an error on my part is likely to be because you are a lowly mod player ;)

MrCustard - Very few people in Base Tribes use vehicles AT ALL, since skiing is much less hassle, and will generally get you there quicker than an APC of any type.

As to heavy skiing, granted it's more difficult when you first try, but after a bit of offline praccy, and getting to know the maps better, you'll soon be flying along. Which reminds me, a competant Heavy skier, will travel...ahem...a *bit* faster than a light doing the same thing ;)

I am told by a mate of mine (a lowly mod player *g*) that APCs are much more frequently used in Mods, (other than TAC), so if you play mods, ignore my section on APCs.

Anyways my apologees to Corporate, since I have no idea what the probs may be with your copy of Tribes, just thought I'd try and clear this up :)

I don't play any mods, no disk space.

I have been playing for a month and on nearly every server that has a vehicle pad, i have seen (flew) an HPC/LPC around full o' heavys. Usually mortering the other base, ok it might not be very often, but from my experience (which is somewhat lacking) i have seen a lot of people useing APC's of one sort or another.

I guess i should try to get this heavy skiing perfected to a T then for Tribes2 release, after all i only got Tribes so that i would not be a newbie when T2 is released. I will give it a go later. I have seen peeps in light armour going skiing along at XXXTREMELY fast speeds but when i try it i can never get enough momentum.

The only map i can get a decent ski up on is Raindance, playing Diamond sword, i have a very fast route from the otherteams flag (involves jetpacking off the tower and skiing down the hill and under the bridge).

I play Raindance well because i played the Demo of Tribes for 2 weeks solid while jungle.com found a copy and Raindance was the only CTF map. It was the first map i went on when i got the full version and i did *ahem* pretty well and still do when i play that map. But all the othermaps seem like mazes to me. I can't do any of them at all so i generally stay on Raindance maps because doing well is fun. Being called a st00pid n00b isn't fun (which is pretty much the only thing that is said to me when i play on other maps)

I guess i should try to learn these other maps. Hopefully T2 will be released in US and UK same week so everyone will be on equal ground when learning maps. (with the addition of bots it should be even easier)

Mr Mustard - some advice. I'm unaware if you you currently use a skiing script or not but I can guarantee you it'll speed up your efforts to HO perfection :)

Visit http://www.tribalwar.com/files

This whole site is a great resource for demos/scripts and all the lark. I'd recommend the Presto Pack on Speed if you are unfamiliar with the concepts of scripting or z0dd HUD/Viking Pack should you be willing to take a little longer setting things up - I personally use a script pack built on a similar low overhead concept like these. Hope this helps the learning curve.

Note: Anyone who even thinks of telling me scripts are shit/suck can kindly fuck off - they help, lots :)
