I know there's like cruises and stuff down the east coast of America and to the Med' etc, but I was wondering if you can still get a boat to America like in the old days.

I was talking to an old woman on the train who said she's never been on a plane before but she used to go to Canada all the time by ship, just made me think.

You definately can.
When I was a kid by the way, I went on a cruise around the med, going from Malta and ending up in venice, via places like Turkey Israel and Egypt.
In one fortnight I saw the Roman remains at Ephesus, the Pyramids of Giza and Gologotha and Bethlehem in Jerusalum.
I was 16 years old, it was the time of me life looking back, Id reccomend it to anyone for sure :)

Thanks Throd for answering.

I suppose we could just Google everything and never rely on familiar opinions ever again, only sometimes it's easier to just ask on the off chance that someone here (or wherever) might actually know the answer through first-hand experience - rather than trauling Google for - how long does ot take to get a boat/ship to America?; How much does it cost to get a boat to America?; where do you go in the UK to get a boat to America?; is it fun going to America (or wherever) by boat?; What did you do on the boat?;' WOuld you go by boat again?; and so on and get answers to other questions you never even thought of.

In fairness Maljonic it was only ECA behaving like a spaz (suprise!!) , I just dont think anyone else knew anything about it.
One thing, a big cruise liner is much more stable than a ferry (that most people have been on), so dont think its very sea-sicky, cos its not, well, my journey wasnt anyway.
Just mind out for icebergs, thats all :)

I wasn't being a dick but come on you can google the answer then ask for opinion,.

What part of this isnt answerable in less time by google, or common sense? Sorry if I came across badly but come on! If you want opinion ask for it, if you wanna know the train times or do trains still run like in them old days people talk about....

throd: how long till you can go cruisin with saga ? :p

Yes, but then again - this is a discussion forum, it's an interesting discussion starter - sure a quicker answer could be received elsewhere but that's not really the point is it.

I went on a cruise for my Honeymoon last year best time ever tbh. I wont ever do another short haul holiday, I would rather wake up everyday or so in another location. great food great places lots to do. Planning on another one this year and really looking forward to it.

Yeah, the idea of lots of different places is really good, much better than one place with a beach, not my kind of holiday at all .

Okay, for the smart arses, what search terms are you using in Google to find the answer to this. I've tried a few and found fuck all on the subject. All I can find is stuff like I mentioned, cruises around the Med' and down the east coast of America, and some to Alaska. All the ones I found involve flying to America first, which isn't at all what I'm talking about.

See how quickly you can search and find the info on how to get to New York (for instance) from a sea port in the UK by ship.

The first link returned: http://www.seat61.com/UnitedStates.htm has details of Southampton to New york. Took about 2 mins to find ;)

Smart arse... and wow, that's mint. I might even try that! :)

P.S. This sounds a bit different too: http://www.freightercruises.com/

Interesting. I'm seriously considering packing it all in and heading off around the world for a year. Thing is I'd like to do as much of the trip by surface transport as possible, so freighters for some of the trip might be quite cool, particularly the Pacific.

As opposed to submarines and earth-boring machines?

:)

Like Michael Palin? That would be great if you had the time.
