Guys,

I'm sure we've all noticed the events of the last couple of days, and I'm sure you all have your own opinion... but I don't think anyone is doing themselves any favours by pursuing this any further...

It's pretty difficult to look at things from both sides objectively but I think that's the only way peace can be restored to the once-placid General forums...

Just as the HL guys generally frequent the FPS/HL forums there are a certain group who 'live' here in General discussion and tbh I'd say if you treat them with the kind of respect they show one another they'll do the same to you...

One of the major catalysts of the past few days was the charity donation link... granted it was for a good cause but the original poster totally 'screwed the pooch' with his approach - had a couple of paragraphs been written with a polite request for people to donate for free I'm sure noone would have had any objections and quite possibly we'd have seen positive feedback for the suggestion. As we know that didn't happen and instead the thread started with little more than a link... hadly explanatory.


While some people might only occasionally check in on general discussion and therefore wouldn't mind such posts there are people who post almost exclusively in this area and any such posts are actually pretty annoying... too many people have tried to come in and post their homepage/company site/competitor link and a valid charity url in amongst such rubbish isn't as easy to spot as you'd think.

Likewise people who want to open threads saying 'hello, this is me' aren't doing themselves any favours. The forum regulars aren't vicious raptors hell-bent on the destruction of 'n00bs', just ask yourself what purpose such a thread serves in a discussion area - do you want us to discuss the way you went about introducing yourself?

Wouldn't it be better to read threads and offer constructive and intelligent reply? That after all is the purpose of forums and once you weed out all the playful abuse that the regulars hurl at one another thats all that really remains...

The 'newbie guide' isn't some form of dictator rulebook, nor is it sanctioned totally by Barrysworld - the tone in which it comes across in some places should make that quite obvious. It does however in its own little way give some idea as to how to act around the people that forum the general discussion community... Don't troll - it's pointless. Don't introduce yourself with an entire thread - that's pointless too, all we can reply with is a hello and that hardly makes it any more valid. If you have a worthwhile URL that WE would like to see/be involved in, but if it's for your own gain or in opposition to our community/interests either don't bother or accept the criticism you recieve.


I for one really don't like the way things have degenerated here, none of us are innocent in this case so can we all please make an effort here to make up and go about our business - this kind of thing spoils it for everyone.

Xav, the some of the people here are generally rude, and ridiculously unwelcoming. As such a lot of the peeps that have come over from HLCCL havent been able to make a decent effort at constructive input and sensible discussion.

The initial responses to Tarbys thread about the league, were derogatory and uncalled for, and the charity thread was a perfect example of the mindless recation of flamage from the select few peeps here that think in some way they own this forum. So now it would seem the HLCCL guys, me included, are determined not to be pushed away by these idiots, if they payed for the forum then np, but they didn't, it is a public forum, and as such should be open to any member of the public.

We have had our forum for well over 5 years now (and we pay for it), and are experienced community members, never would we condone the actions of the idiots on this forum, the use of retard pictures and fuck off and die of aids quotes are ridiculous, and bang out of order. Guess the resolve is to show that you can't bully peeps away. Would love for all of us to get on, and maybe even for some interesting discussion etc to arise, but for that to happen, the narrow minded idiots, need to chill, and realise the reality of the situation.

hi there, yes I am a n00b to these boards, tho have been lurking for ages, but I have to say the tone of some of the 'regulars' around here is very off putting, I know each community and each forum has its 'regular' members and cliques and fully accept that you have to earn respect when entering a new community but quite frankly the actions of some of the people around here (not to mention some of the extremely distateful imges that have been used) does no credit to barrysworld as an organisation or business,


I dare say that for actually daring ro speak my opinion some of aforementioned 'regulars' will probably have a flame fest at me or 'plonk' me (havent you lot realised that makes u look like a bunch of plonkers???) and quite frankly they can have a ball if thats what makes them feel good, as if the prevailing ill will to those wishing to contribute to a new (to them) community I will move on elsewhere

m8, I'm not going to defend *anyone* here, but most of the above could have been avoided if things were put in context - we have a HL forum for people who play HL, general discussion is exactly that and the league post was in the wrong place. As to the charity thread people did apologise for their initial flames but on the flipside would it have hurt him massively to have written a paragraph or two to accompany the link?

As to people fitting in, no two communities are alike - if you don't feel you have anything to say on the topics being discussed then by all means start a relevant topic within GD - but make it exactly that... league announcements and links don't belong here... ok the guys react quite harshly now but for the people who visit these forums daily they see 5+ occurences of this daily and I've got to admit it is pretty frustrating.

As to how these forums are run they're unique in that they're self moderated - if our members feel the thread is out of place we encourage them to say-so. There's no harm in pointing out that a thread is irrelevant but I have to admit that the pictures are overkill - maybe that's something that we should stop doing as a collective.

There is no 'us and them' - we're all online gamers or geeks of some description - worst case a s00pa mod intervenes and bans people - can we just all chill out before it gets to that stage?

Eddz, thanks for your post, I can now see them again. It just gets frustrating when we get an invasion of people just out to cause trouble. I'm only a semi-regular poster in the General, and it's depressing to see things like those uber-1337 hax0r's (makes me cringe to type it) posting shite just for the sake of it. I suppose we are grumpy old men, a kid scratched our car last night, so today we hate all kids.
I'm sure some of you will fit in nicely here, and I'm surprised I've not seen more of you posting in the HL forum, which is one of my more regular haunts.
