Hi

I've just got my CD and letter, after 2+ months of waiting and have just installed it ;) and connected and ICQ wouldn't connect. I disconnected, dialed my 'old' connecion and ICQ worked again. I've just redialled cableinet and ICQ won't work again :(

It seems fine for playing action quake and stuff. Are there any fellow customers out there, the cableinet support site (http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/dial) won't display, that could be them tho as I have had no trouble with other websites, anyone help?

bigt :)

I've been using Surf Unlimited virtually since it launched.

It went through an absolutely DIRE patch where the entire network was flooded out. You couldn't even get an external line on voice calls out of our exchange at one point, it was that bad.

They then upgraded most of the routers for capacity and speed. Following from that, it was the best ISP I've ever used. Solid 130 ping, 5k/sec downloads.

Now it's kind of "averaged out". It's dreadful at the weekend, because the load increases by about 150%. During the week it is more than passable, certainly better than BT Free, and better than the vast majority of ISPs out there. If you really need the best connection possible, then use Jolt or something for games, but I've played games during the week on SU with no problems at all.

Basically, it follows the age-old supply and demand rule. They announced it, launched it, and it got flooded, demand outweighed supply. They upgraded everything, and load was below average, so it was lovely and fast. Now, it's about average load (except at the weekend, when it rockets,) so you get a pretty decent connection.

Seems you were right mookie m8 :)

ICQ works on most connects, pings are ~200 and things are cool.

Do you use the proxies for surfing etc?

I'd like to change my opinion.

After using it last night, SU sucks donkey cock. Looks like it's reached saturation finally. "Great".

you can use any number on this page > http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/html/support/connect/pop.html EXCEPT those in red.. you get charged for those :)

and.. if you red the service staus page (url on a post above) you'll see that cableinet was buttfucked by a large gremlin today, everything seems to have fucked up :/

like stu- sez, too many people. *cough* those who just got their CDs.. had been fine up till now :)

bigt: you can ring any of the numbers on that page APART from the ones in red under Surf Unlimited. I know, because I've rung about 10 of them.

However, if Telewest are telling you SU isn't "active" yet, they probably mean on your account. Are you paying your bill by direct debit? You have to do this to get SU (at least you used to). There's no 'technical' reason why SU isn't active.

Then again, if they've sent you your CD, your account must be active. Assuming you signed up only for Surf Unlimited (you didn't previously have a Cableinet account which you've "upgraded"?), then it's their fault if they haven't switched you over yet. If they charge you for those calls, demand a refund.

stu- I didn't previously have a cableinet a/c. On last months bill I paid (direct debit) it charged 10 pounds for surfunlimited but also had a surfunlimited credit for 10 pounds (this is advance till the 22nd), I ASSumed they'd realise I had my CD. The blokey said summit along the lines of SU is fucked and no-one is using it atm! WTF? You and mookie and thousands of others are.

I'm sorry to say but there is still a saying that rings true as much now as it did back when it was coined, 'You get what you pay for'.

bigt: sounds very wierd. Surf Unlimited is NOT a new technology, it's just a new pricing plan. If you've been connecting as normal to your Cableinet POP, then you shouldn't be charged. If they've screwed up your billing, that's their own fault.

Incidentally, LINX has been very knackered over the past few days: ALL UK internet services have been affected. SU has been affected more than most because of the routing it takes, but it is not a permanent problem, and SU will be back to being "decent" soon (ie when LINX is fixed).

Another problem with LINX is the fact that they haven't expanded the bandwidth even with the large increase in internet use, get ready for the slow down :D.

stu- I agree, very weird indeed. Oh well guess I can live another week without 24/7 access (I am to scared to go on cos it might be costing, but I s'pose it's only 1p/min)
