Cable Sharing

I will hopefully be getting 512k NTL cable installed soon, this will be shared between me and my brother. Now the problem will be that my brother doesnt play online games, instead he is obsessed with downloading everything from Films to mp3s non-stop and I know that the minute he gets cable with me he will probably not stop.

Whereas I am an online gamer who wants a nice smooth connection with low ping, as you would expect from such a connection.

Is there anyway to limit the 'damage' his download does to my gaming? - is there any programs that will allocate bandwidth to each pc to say 256/64 per computer?

I jsut want to enjoy lag free low ping gaming... heres hoping I can manage that when my bro is downloading some film in the next room :(

Do what I do, keep the hub next to your pc and unplug his cable when you play online...depends whether he's paying for this though.

My experience with downloads is that they hog as much bandwidth as they are capable of....Dunno about progs that control this but it must be possible.

Well he is paying half and he will have control over the connection (he is the Older Brother so my parents insist he has control) so simply disconnecting him wouldnt go down too well :)

One way of limiting the damage would be to maybe get him to use a download manager that can limit the bandwidth used for the download?
