Why is it taking so long for UK to get
cable modems/ADLS ?

I just came to the conclusion UK is crap !
BT have been controlling everyone with there 1p per minute and hasnt taken the Internet at all serious. they claim ADLS will be made available to anyone within the M25 in London in March
smile.gif

Id like to see BT pull that off, they have 3 or 4 weeks left. Im with a cable company called Cable and Wireless(biggest cable company in UK) and I must say they are the WORST cable company in history.

They are nothing but problems from day 1, they have been planning Digital TV with digital cable modem access for oh lets see 3 years
frown.gif
they even launched a massive ad campaign I dont know if anyone saw it back in 1999 about Cable and Wirelss DIGTAL. of course it never happen.

Instead im hearing like 70% of people in UK will either have to rely on Cable and Wireless to sort out there problems... or BT to start ADSL or to get the new ADLS mobiles phones due end of this year.

I have heard one of two small never heard of before cable companies offering digital access/TV/Internet or offering a cable modem, yet BT/Cable and Wireless giants have nothing on offer !

There is something very wrong with England.
As my freind once said, just move to America.

anyone with dreams of living in the US of A will be put off wanting to go there if they watched this thing on discovery bout a US hospital, in about an hour there was about 5 people come in with gunshot wounds, most just hit by random bullets.

thats BAD.

I've never been worried about the bullet that has my name on it...it's the one that says "To Whom It May Concern" that frightens me.

(Yeah I know it's an old one!)

The problem with the UK is that it has the worst of both worlds as far as electronic communications are concerned. The US has proper competition (where the idea is provide or go bust), and France has a *state-owned* monopoly, where the principle is to provide (and, at least in France, actually works). Both of these countries have got wider available ADSL than the UK has, which really makes one laugh out loud when the UK gov't talks about making the UK an internet capital (particularly for e-commerce). Heck, even University Net access is taking steps BACKWARDS..

The problem is made worse because the UK is notorious for massive underinvestment (this is a partial leftover from the 1980s since the financial policies made borrowing for investment a very costly and risky excercise), and the establishment tends to be very technophobic (come a recession, R&D gets axed first)..

Agreed Necro,

When the government talks about the UK being a centre for e-commerce, they probably means we'll build the buildings that the foreign sites will use to house their servers.

It's sad, very sad, but nothing new.

If we must talk about politics:

Labour: Have gone VERY slowly... could possibly turn the county around with more time. not much noticeable difference from last gov. Although they did say they were about to start spending the stockpile.

Conservatives: Come on, lets be seriosu here, would you really vote for Hague? he cannot control his own party, God knows what he'd do with the whole country (actually, I can guess, he'd end up splitting it into 50 different sections so that each faction of his party could have a bit).

Lib Dem: No idea at all. Were the nicest sounding people, pffered a nice middle ground. then Charles Kennedy took over and no one has heard anything of them for the past 6 months.

Others: Wouldn't stand a chance.

'tis sad really isn't it.

petrol has gone up, and that enuf to make me ill, i haven't got a car yet but i really hate the gov for putting petrol up, i would vote for any party that says they will put petrol tax down.

Politicians who claim that they are going to reduce taxes people pay tend to be blatent liars. That trick has been tried numerious times before.

UK = Shit hole = Agreed !

Petrol Going up = Yes under new Labour - but only at the same rate it has been for the past 10 years anyway (We now have the most expensive Petrol in europe)

When it comes to the next Vote, it will only be between the Big 2 (with a few lib dem's at the side), But if everyone who isn't happy with either of them, voted for some of the smaller parties and a few more littler MP's got in (i dont mean short ones)- that might all change in the future - one day we'll see oversized top hats & Yogic Fliers bouncing round, taking the piss out of this country like we should all be doing !

Indeed, you can't really blame tax rises and costs on current governments, since it wouldn't matter WHO was in power, Inflation IS inflation. Nowt you can do wi'that.

BUT, I would agree that we are right to expect more from our government and their (seemingly) hidden agendas...

Hmm, I await the day when our country isn't in debt

To get back to the original subject.

I am also a C&W customer and have been more than pissed off about their promises etc.

There IS some good news!!!

You may be aware that NTL have taken over C&W's cable operations entirely. NTL already provide a cablemodem service at a very cheap rate £40 per month - unmetered.
They plan to pass this onto the C&W system and can notify you when they will be doing this in your area if you fill in a form at their website.

So....... hopefully.......they will be sending me an Email within the next couple of months
