my uni (manchester) have just allocated me halls which have no internet access! (nearly all of them have 10mbit janet) so you'll prolly wont be seeing me on the publics as of next week.

Strange how universities can sanction the sale and consumption of alchohol, but not gaming. Money must be a factor here. I wonder if there is software available that can reroute the game data?

Actually unless its changed since I left last year most of the Manchester ones dont have Janet access unless its in a public cluster like at Owens park. The UMIST ones however do. Somehow I ended up going to UMIST and living in a Manchester hall of res - without a Janet connection.

I was a bit miffed.

The use of janet is sposed to be academic only apparently. Hell they even block streaming video and ftp. Mind u i had ftp, being a cs student back then- i felt so priviledged

I believe the reason they stopped video access from UMIST was not to make the Janet use more 'academic', but because they have to pay for every meg downloaded (I cant remember if it was a penny or pound, either way, it adds up). Second hand storey so I have no idea if its true - was from a reasonably reliable source tho
