Bye Bye Outlook Express

Hi guys

It has now been officially confirmed that, like Internet Explorer, Outlook Express is to be no longer actively updated. Any patches in the future will be to fix security concerns, rather than to add extra functionality.

Dan Leach, Lead Product Manager for Microsoft's Information Worker Product Management Group
[Outlook Express] just sits where it is ... The technology doesn't go away, but no new work is being done. It is consumer e-mail in an early iteration, and our investment in the consumer space is now focused around Hotmail and MSN. That's where we're putting the emphasis in terms of new investment and new development work."
So, although Outlook Express won't disappear, we may be waiting until Longhorn in 2005 to find out where Microsoft is heading. Some are speculating that Microsoft will release an 'all-in-one' browser, a bit like MSN Explorer, which utilises Hotmail as the email client, but with added support for POP3 and IMAP. Others just say Microsoft will push as hard as it can to get people to switch to the new and improved Outlook 2003 (which will be available to buy as a standalone product as well as being bundled with Office).

Kind Regards

Eudora (www.eudora.com)

Not free, but has adverts in the main window.
Very functional (even if I've got to be honest and say I prefered the UI of Express).

I used Eudora until recently. I changed because the full text of some messages wasn't making it through to me. I'm unsure if AVG or Eudora was to blame, but I was going to change to Minotaur once a non-nightly build was released anyway...so I did. Very nice it seems too.

Outlooks memory usage > everything else.

Plus I dont know if its changed for 2k3, but having 1 massive pst file, that you know if going to fuck up sometime in the future is a really bad bad thing. IMHO.

I like OE actually. Simple mail program. I use Outlook though cause I have a PDA it Syncs with. Eudora is one ugly mofo tbh.

Been using Eudora for 18 months or so, and when you said about the ads if you don't pay, I thought, 'No it doesn't!' then minimized this window to check and sure enough there are ads.

They are just that unobtrusive that I didn't notice them in all that time. Poor marketing obviously, but a good thing for sure.

bah! I was looking forward for Outlook Express v7.0 :(

Oh well, guess it's best to use Outlook 2002 then. It has more advanced features concerning junkmail, right? I've also been thinking of using Eudora since I got Eudora v5.2.1 in paid mode.

Pegasus is only really used at uni's and colleges. It does what its supposed to do, which is send your email, and not give you enough eye candy that you spend all day hogging the PC.
