BW Servers AREN'T anally configured but.....
In my humble opinion Team Damage should definately default to ON.
I've presented arguments below why TD should be ON - but also I've presented rebuttals to why TD should be off (lower down).
Lets get some sensible discussion on this without personal flames etc![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
My reasoning behind turning TD ON is this:
1) Without TD ON then newbies will never learn:
a) Not to mortar spam near their base
b) Not to use inappropriate weapons IN their base
c) Not to run over mines their teammates have strategically laid
d) That throwing mortars around gens isn't good
e) That there are GOOD and BAD places to lay turrets
f) Very much at all![Frown :( :(](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
2) With TD OFF the gameplay changes to *REALLY* heavily favour the defence (they can mortar spam everywhere with impunity - not fun).
3) With TD OFF bad turret placements can't be adjusted (I've placed turrets badly myself in the past only to hit myself for it when I can't change it).
4) Turning it off doesn't stop people really making an arse of themselves (Tkillers just get into vehicles and ram you to death and place turrets in stupid places on purpose (which you then can't move)). Indestructible players have also been known to stand in doorways in T1 - stopping you getting OUT of your base (tho this shouldn't be much of a problem in T2)!
5) With TD ON then the attackers have a reasonable (but not easy) chance of making capping runs. This encourages more offensive play from both sides (which is MUCH needed in Tribes 2 CTF because the game dynamics favour the defence more anyway).
6) With TD ON you encourage teamwork and learn to take more care of your teammates through concientious limiting of your actions (such as not planting mortars at your teammates feet).
Teamwork is what the game is about!
However - I do acknowledge that there are reasonable arguments for keeping TD off:
1) Tkillers are scum of the earth and can *really* ruin a game. (Which I agree with).
But I would answer that with sensible admins/the experience of the Tribes 1 communtiy on the BW servers - the Tkillers will get banned very quickly (and as we all know - they CAN'T come back without buying a new copy of the game).
This is borne out by the fact that I've had T2 since the US release date and have experienced a DRAMATIC downturn in the amount of Tkillers. Barrysworld servers (where I will be playing almost exclusively) now have virtually no tkillers (there was a spate on Friday when the game was released - but they were VERY quickly banned). In fact - BW has always been good for this.
2) Accidental Tkilling isn't fun.
I agree - but its part of the nature of the game - and people LEARN not to be quite so irresponsible with their weapons around their own base.
This builds up skill - and teaches newbies AIMING![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
A lot of this one's down to personal taste - and my personal taste is I don't mind getting accidentally tkilled now and again - and in my experience - people who get tkilled all the time have a tendency to "put themselves in the line of fire" more than other players.
And frankly, its bloody funny when you're on the tail of a capper - and one of your teammates accidentally mid-air-mortars you in the face![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
3) I can't think of any other reasons why TD should be off (and loads more why it should be on!).
As long as Barrysworld is prudent with its choice of SAD access (giving it to mature, experienced tribes players who have always treated the community as a WHOLE with respect) then we can look forward to a LONG time of fun, tkiller-free gaming![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Lets have sensible discussion!
(BTW - sorry for sounding like someone's dad!)
