BW pubbies!

The BW CTF pubbies are always empty
I am really keen to find some decent CTF pubby's out there! They must be somewhere! Especially the 3W maps whch no one seems to play these dayz!
I'm sick of playing on Demon tbh. I mean this in the nicest way but there are a lot of wankers on there and more often than not the teams are uneven and the competition poor. Other clan players must have times when you practise elsewhere but on your own private servers dont u? Where are u all??

Clan [COB] can be found lumbering around the CIX servers most nights, from about 9:30 onwards. We go there cos our esteemed, and ever-wise captain has rcon.

It's a shame about the BW IDCTF servers. There used to be some good games going on there. The cynical part of me thinks it's to do with the OSP mod, which 'bad sportsmen' don't seem to like.

I never thought about it, but your probably right! It probably is the OSP. Everyone is accusing of bots these days and there are so many l33t railers who can't hit shit with anything else and run into walls, that they probably are scared of competing on a level playing field. How sad that ppl feel the need to cheat. That's the only explaination that makes sense now. The servers were busy one minute (with some fantastic 3w games on sunday mornings!) and then dead the next

I don't use Gamespy, but they show up in PingTool ok, so I guess they would.

If there's nobody about, pop into #cob.uk. There's usually some slacker lurking there.

I checked last night and gamespy had nothing with CIX in the server name
Infact, I did a complete update and refresh of gamespy and trawled my way through the entire list to find that the only ctf servers that had anyone on them were the ones I already had on my favourites list ....... and they suck! No 3W maps being played and the only populted servers being Demon really ...... and playing there is draining away my will to live atm!
I was stunned last night to see that if GS is anything to go by then Q3 is not at all popular atm. All the servers are dead. I can only get a game of the lame old ID maps on demon now! My favourite list in gs used to take a minute or so to refresh, now it's done in the blink of an eye. Either the server listings are out of date, or Q3 is dying a sudden, quick death from where I'm standing!

I agree its a shame that the only busy q3 CTF servers you ever seem to find are demon. I play a lot on demon, but as people say, the quality and general behaviour is poor. There seem to be a minority of kids who just hang out on the demon ctf servers spamming immature garbage all the time. You rarely see them even play much. Also getting the teams unbalanced seems to be a way of life on demon. People will happily join the server and start playing 10 vs 6 games then go 'YEEESSSS' and 'gg' when the 10 team wins

I think the problem may be that the BW public CTF servers were/are percieved as too 'pro'. Nobody would play the smaller maps server. Everyone would play the threewave server, whoose big teams and maps makes its pretty hard for the newbies.

The answer? Well we need to lobby Ethereal and Ceno (the liasons) to get the public CTF servers changed. Then perhaps a concerted effort to set up some fair and good games (perhaps a few CTF evenings ala big games?)

Yep, good point.
What you said about the demon servers is very true. The other point about them I find, is that when you play on demon you get "o turn the bot off u lamer!" kinda remarks, but if you ever find a rare game going on on a BW server, you don't get that. I think players on the decent servers tend to be decent players and therefore expect to see some good moves and good skillz from others, whereas on demon people are new to the game or just generally not very good at it and so are surprised at rail skills or RJ escapes, etc.
Two nights ago I had a couple of great games on a rare occasion when a BW server was populated. We played the harshg (is that it?) map and some 3w. It made for a fantastically refreshing game and it was enjoyable cos it was ALL clan players and so the competition was that much better. I'd love more of that, but it's rare. Making changes to the map cycle or other settings is a difficult one imo. It's finding the fine line between attracting the ppl who join the server for a competitive game on something other than the boring old standard ID maps (for example) and attracting the kids you've mentioned from Demon.
I am surprised that the small maps one isnt used a lot more. Not only does it have the ID maps, but the ML ones too. Maybe one server could be set up with a map cycle of all the league maps (but their order jumbled up), so remove ml1 and 3 and ID 1 and 4, but add the 3w maps. I dunno if that would work, but if it did, maybe the other BW pubby (currently 3w maps) could be used to cycle through custom maps which are proposed for possible league inclusion? This might turn out to be a non-starter, but as the servers stand atm, they can't get much more under-used. Surely a few things could be tried to get more people interested?
It would be great for all if we could get some big ctf games going that league clan players would be interested in attending. We all have our friendly clan wars, but for those times when you pop on the pc for just half an hour or so, how nice it would be to know some decent servers you could pop into, rather than having to suffer the frustration of Demon

Btw, I thought I recognised the harshg map from QW. Am I right or just mad?

Couldn't agree more - too little decent CTF around - nearly all the CTF servers are empty - though I don't venture on demon at all. I am quite often around on Sunday mornings - as are a few other XPd guys - find us in #xpd or ICQ me. If you want something a bit more formal - then we praccy on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays - but are often around at other times too!
