I know this has been discussed many many times before, but ive just been chatting on irc and we came up with a few old and new ideas that may help Game.net / BW...
1: make all servers public, but if a subscriber tries to join a full server, kick a non subscriber (FIFO - first-in, first-out). I guess the existing firewall set up could be adapted to do this.
This does seem a bit aggressive, so...
2: make 25/50/75% of all playerlimits public, with the remaining reserved slots for subbers (I know this is possible with HL, but dont know about other games)
3: certain number of 100% public servers, so people can actually see that servers are there
4: make all servers public during certain times of the day
5: in Game stores/online have an offer where when u purchase a game thats playable over Game.net have a free 1 month trial with Game.net....that way nigh on anyone could try the service out, and may then subscribe after seeing what its like.
U could even let people buy multiple games at once to get more free time (buy 2 games, get 3 months free), then it may encourage people to buy some more games, and more people use the service maybe telling others how good it is....either way Game win.
6: maybe even try to get some kind of agreement with some ISP's...offering blisteringly fast connections to Game.net if you connect through specific ISP's and they advertise that fact for u (Nildram, BTO etc.). I reckon some ISP's which dont already have a gaming setup already might be interested, they get a new service to offer which is already established costing them nothing.
Theres probably nothing ive said here that hasnt been said 100 times before, but its still disappointing only using the BW servers on pre-arranged occasions
