Buying a shuttle

I want something to keep me going until BTX arrives when i'm going to splurge.

I have a nice monitor + keyboard + mouse + pad already so i basically need

case
motherboard
ram.
gfx card.

I might add another hdd but for now i'll shunt my 120gb and leave my current system with a 30gb.

I've had a look round shuttle prices and found it a bit inconsistent.

I'm looking for a P4 version.

Also is the PSU that comes with is ( 200W i believe ) enough?

EDIT: for gfx card i have a 150 quid price range, 9600 pro or 9800?

ram i was thinking 1gb corsair.

case + mobo + psu comes all together on a shuttle doesnt it?

MicroDirect (thanks Jonty, Ch3tan) have the cheapest shuttles online, from what I've seen. They have special offers on the weekends and the shuttle is usually on them.

A shuttle would include the case/psu/motherboard so when you find the right one, thats those sorted :) You also won't need a heatsink/fan thing.

Don't you need a CPU in that list?

um yes!

most of the places i've seen shuttles offered come bundled w/ a cpu.

Me forgot to say the 200W PSU has been fine for me so far.
And the only thing I know about the P4 shuttles is that they are more expensive :) I only really looked at the AMD ones, better mobo/onboard gfx/cheaper :p

Oh! And take me outta your sig faggit :)

I didnt see any places offering shuttles with cpu's. Link please!

Microdirect is certainly the cheapest place for p4 shuttles, especially on the weekends.

9600 pro on ebuyer are around £100.

The new p4 shuttle is just round the corner though, worth holding out for the black SG65G2 rather than getting the current sg61g2 (whcih is fine and I am happy with). Also the Athlon 64 based SN85G3 is coming out soon.

my upper limit is 750, i'd like to spend around 650 though.

Main reason is i need an upgrade soonish so i can play hl2/max payne 2 / etc, but i dont want to do a huge upgrade ( ie r9800 pro and corsair XMS4000 ) with BTW/PCIX/ just around the corner ( isnt amd64 out today? ).

I'm going to wait until HL2 is out and then spec something up that runs it reasonably.

Probably going to get 1gb corsair value select 3700 unless price has dropped on some other stuff by the time I upgrade.

Mine was £666.24 for SB61G2, P4 2.6C, 2*512 giel pc3200 (wit alumin heat spreader), WD 120gb S-ATA and Black CD-RW/DVD combi.

You will save about a hundred not getting a new HD, maybe worth getting the p4 2.4C as it is a lot cheaper and oc's easily (by all reports, talk to yaka) to 3.0ghz. YOu'll save about £30 if you already have a CD drive, its not worth spoiling the looks and putting a floppy drive in.

It's well worth getting a SATA drive though if you do find you have the cash, very nice :) Although the price would allow you to get a radeon 9600 pro instead.

Where are these sites that sell a shuttle barebones +CPU ?

You're not a n00b. A Shuttle is a major brand of Small Form Factor PCs. Shuttles are effectively barebone systems, meaning you get a case, motherboard, cooling solution and a PSU for your money. You then add a CPU, RAM, hard-drive, DVD/CD drive etc. as you see fit.

Shuttles, and other Small Form Factor systems, have grown extremely popular because of their small size (20cm wide/18.5cm high/30cm deep) and good looks. The custom made motherboards also support all of the latest standards (for Intel, there are Shuttles which support hyperthreading, 800Mhz FSB etc; and for AMD, Shuttles which support 400Mhz FSB using the nForce2 chipset).

They're also not too expensive, hovering between £150-250 depending on which model you buy.

Kind Regards

... or were you joking?

No, seriously! I used to know a bit about computers, but that was when Pentium processors (v1) were replacing 486's, and we were all getting Vesa local bus video cards.

If you don't buy all the magazines or read the internet regularly for this kind of stuff, its easy to fall behind. Nowadays when I need something for my computer, I just go into 'thick mode' and rely on other people to solve the problem.

:D

They look nice, but I don't think they're suitable for me, I have a tape backup drive, 2 CDroms, and 5 HDD to consider.

250Gb Drive
An all-in-one DVD/CDRW

That's all you need.

I love shuttles to bits and have got 3 of the buggers

Expensive toy.

My only use for one would be an entertainment system type doohicky like many here have built before.

I've always said, when I get a job, I'll try and spend 3000 quid on a PC just to say HAH WANKERS IM LEET (I'm a nerd). And then kit out my bedroom with nice stuff...

Now that I think about it, is there a site that has a list of different uses that people have for their shuttles?

You could always spend the money on getting a house. That would be a bit more LEET.

The thing is, the more stuff you buy, the longer you put off your house, the more money your house will cost.

Look at the specs more closely. Both have firewire. The 65 has a wireless moduel and 10/100 LAN. Wait for the reviews of both models and see what is said.

Here you go, reviews of two of the new shuttle models for your browsing.

65g2

85g4 /edit - the 85g4 review isn't any different from the preview they had up a few days ago, apparently they had a dodgy unit and are awaiting a new review unit.
