Buying a new PC...

my shite P3 450 has just about given up now so for the summer and next september when i go to uni i have decided to buy a new PC. I have about 1k to spend (thanks mum ;)) on it and this little beauty caught me eye. I cant be arsed to build my own system due to the problems i had with my current system and it is cheaper to buy complete anyway:

MESH MATRIX XP 2000 +GTi4

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Processor

512Mb 266MHz High Performance PC2100 DDR

80Gb ATA-133 (7200rpm) with 2Mb Buffer

19" Digital 0.26mm Dot Pitch (18" VIS)

64Mb nVIDIA GeForce4 - MX440 - Twin View

16x DVD-ROM (40x CD-ROM)

CD Re-Writable (24x10x40)

Soundblaster Audigy + 1394 Firewire Port

Creative Labs Inspire 5300 - 5 Point Surround

Internal 56Kbps voice/fax/data modem

MESH 3 Year On-Site Warranty

1173.83 squid inc VAT and delivery

What is Meshs reputation like and is there anywhere else i could look to get a better deal? This looks pretty good to me except perhaps the graphics card. Well.....

Shame you missed the famous Aldi PC which would have pissed over the price/specs of the Mesh.:)

Still not bad, but I would not be satisfied with the GF4 MX440.

£1173 all in is a decent price for now. :)

There are a few things I would change if possible:

64Mb nVIDIA GeForce4 - MX440 - Twin View

Although its a GF4, the MX series is pretty crap. They wouldn't give much performance improvement over a GF2 MX. Try obtaining a GF3 Ti 200 or better. There is no point having a nice rig like that and having a cack graphics card as it will simply work as a bottleneck. Possibly downgrade the monitor to cover the increased costs.

16x DVD-ROM (40x CD-ROM)
CD Re-Writable (24x10x40)

What make? Best DVD Drives are probably Pioneer (good value as well). Not sure about CD-RW, Lite-on models i hear are good value as well.

Internal 56Kbps voice/fax/data modem

Make sure its a hardware modem which is of reasonable quality. No matter good your setup is, a slow crappy modem makes Internet life a lot less pleasurable.

I have heard mainly good things, but also bad things as well. Just like any other company in that respect. But generally customer satisfaction is pretty good.

I'm building my own computer before going off to Uni in the Summer. Sadly I am having to fund my own bill and therefore I have budgeted £500 to buy the following:
Processer: Athlon XP 1700+ or something similar
RAM: 256 DDR Crucial Ram
Motherboard: Soltek DRV4 (think thats the name)
Hard Drive: 40 GB IBM 60GXP series. (sadly i have heard many a bad thing about these on here recently).
DVD: Pioneer Slot 16x drive
Case: Some sort of crappy Enlight case.
Graphics Card: Hopefully the GF3 Ti 200 will be a lot cheaper by the summer, if not, I'll settle for a GF2 Titanium.

I think thats about it, good luck with your PC mate, and post any other questions you may have.

P.S. Don't laugh at my computer spec. :p

thanks for the reply mate.
the graphics is definatly something i will be upgrading like u said i will downgrade the 19 inch to 17 inch and perhaps get a GF3. DVD and CDR dont really bother me too much as long as they are there, the modem will be taken out staraight away, i have a supra 56ke. Also when i go to uni next year there will be a nice JANET connection waiting in my room
Cant wait to get me new system, my current system is shocking:

PIII 450
128mb RAM
13 Gb HD (!)
Voodoo 3 (oh dear)

Ive had no money to upgrade since my money has been focused on my car. Thats a good system your getting for the money if u get the GF3.
What uni you going to m8?

Seems quite cheap, I recently paid quite a bit more than that for mine, though mine has a Gf4 ti 4400 in it.
Btw, I restarted Op flash cos I reloaded, and OMG the difference. Absolutely awesome.
Oh and my pc makes 9350 on 3d mark. Yes, 9350 :)

/sorry im being gleefull, but GOD I LOVE THIS PC!!

I'm going to Nottingham Uni (if I get the grades) to study Computer Science. I'm gonna have a nice Janet connection in my room as well, should be slightly better than my current 56k.

How about you?

Spooge:

I cant stress enough the benefits of having a nice moniter. I recently aquired a iiyama 19" VM pro 454 (Diamondtron Tube) and its sooooooo much better than my CTX 15" not just the size but the clarity of the picture - i never want to go back to a shite moniter again.

If you are going to downgrade to a 17" make sure its not a cheap one because the lower cost jsut its worth the drop in quality

otherwise the gfx card is the thing to change. I have a gf3 Ti200 @ 227/508 which benchmarks higher than some Ti500s at twice the price so get one if you can.

Thanks for reply.
I might downgrade the monitor to a 17inch shitty one or even a 15inch in order to get a Ti200 or 500 or maybe a GF4 4600 as i have a 19 inch connected to this ageing slow shit PC which i could use for it. It is a cheap 19inch but its a luxury for CS etc, a bit of a pain for text but still. then a couple of months after i have bought it i will buy a quality 17inch, Perhaps a Trinitron or summit.

Kenny, i will look out for you in a canterbury mate :)
