my pc is dying on it's arse, and i'm due a £700 tax rebate. thus, i've been doing a lot of thinking on buying a new pc. frankly, i know jack about the tech side of things, but i know that i want something roughly future-proofed and that i can upgrade as times goes on, should it be necessary.

i've been looking at AMD based systems as i have gaming in mind, but i also plan to do a lot of painter, illustrator & photoshop work, a long with a little after effects, premiere, final cut etc in the future. thus about 2gb and 2-300gb hard drive is necessary.

in terms of a gfx card, i was thinking of something fairly mid-range as i imagine with the advent of DX10 in the new year, i'll be wanting a new card by next summer anyway.

so i got a few quotes off various web-sites and was basically wondering if people could give some advice - i.e, are these quotes toss, over-priced... should i be looking at other avenues? if not, which one should i go for?

come on nerdz, i need your advice.

onto the quotes:

I just done a quick one for you, can easily be knocked down to £900 and maybe less by changing the ram or DVD drive or cpu, depends if you want a rox system or not.

If you're serious about it, tomorrow when I get home from uni I will do you another one that involves more time or tweak that and check it over.

Socket939 is pretty much dead, don’t buy it and the Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 CPU Cooler is a crock of shit. I have one here still in the original box that I bought to test on my bros comp. But what do you expect it’s a fiver.

Just read the manuals and the internet take slowly and you will be fine.

edit - the motherboard is cross fire, it's for ATI cards.

So £800 is you're max on budget? If it comes down to the worse I am sure you could find someone to build it for you locally for like £30.

I am not too great with lowest budgets :p but I like this and it's better then the first one, you could trade the CPU for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.40GHz when it's back in stock for an extra 60 quid which is £860 or change the case to a thermaltake gaming case and save £10-£20 or just do both.

You wanted that with out an OS Yeah?(Vista in jan :p )

Np, 2GB of that ram and the 4600+ would go down nicely with vista :p

oh yeah, one other thing - do all the components come with any cabling they might need, or do i need to buy those?

You don't need any cableing just the mobo manual the internet and the other manuals like graphics card and you should be fine. Just don't force anything, make sure its lined up before you put pressure on it and make sure nothing is touching the metal case ;p

Remember to paste the CPU, the shiny side and not pin side.
