Just read this on the BBC's site. Seems Sony really went all out for this publicity stunt at release.

Oo and here was me thinking people who camped out over night at a shop to get the "first" of a new product were losers.

At that price they need to give away a free hd tv to shift them.

i dont know if this is common, but a friend of mine went to asda (24 hour) last night with some more mates, one bought a PS3 @ 12:01 this morning, but while they were there they discovered that this branch had 60 PS3s, only 12 of which we're booked for pre-order, due to little interest.

Yep, same for Game in Middlesbrough.

There was like 10 pre-orders and people were strolling in and picking one up today still, saw about 2 or 3 sold when I walked past earlier and theyve got loads left.

Seems people are coming to their senses that just because it's got "Playstation" written on it, doesn't mean that it justifies the £425 price tag.

I don't think it will sell out but the News says it is selling well.

Wii shipped 8 units to most places = they sell out
PS3 Shipping 50 so it dose not mean its a flop just there were plenty made.

I do not know why people were waiting for shops to open Sony have said they were making enough to avoid the Wii rush and the eBay trade.

Will have to wait and see just how many ship but the News is saying they are selling as expected but that could mean 1 a hour ;)

Might also have something to do with the fact that Sony announced the prices would be slashed in the near future on them and there's no must have games out for it yet anyway.
I imagine they will sell very well as people get them instead of blu-ray dvd players, but since shops arn't crammed full of content yet then there's not going to be the same must have one on the first day rush.

Like someone else has also pointed out wii's sold out instantly because there were none made. Shop near me has 20 pre-orders and has received the grand total of one unit so far this year. If Sony shipped 50 units and had 20 left sitting around in the shop, they actually outsold nintendo..

Just got back from my local GAME (bought a copy of Champs League 2006/2007 :D ) and they had only pre-sold 7 of thier 50 allocation according to the assistant manager. As of 4pm this afternoon they had 41 PS3 on the shelves. I live in what you could consider to be a lower middle class area so that is to be expected I guess considering the £425 price tag. The guy in GAME told me that they had 11 pre-orders cancelled during the week when Sony announced that PS2 was now software emulation with a limited number of games supported, that put off alot of PS2 owners looking to upgrade I guess.

They're still selling more per shop than the WII did, iirc.

Yep, you have to remember that most U.K. stores only got between 6 and 12 Wii on release date though and they were instantly sold out. I can't quite figure out why they are still sold out either, it can't be that difficult to manfacture overclocked Gamecubes for god's sake ;)

yeah it doesnt make sense how wii's are so simple to manufscture in comparison to ps3's , yet sony are the ones able to match demand

I think Nintendo deliberatley caused the shortage to simulate demand - that and they wanted to get it out by Christmas , so they were probably short on units world wide.

I think Sony have went for major stockage so they can try catch up the XBox ASAP. The PS3 has had so much bad press, unit shortages would have really killed the hype.

Why you buying playstations?

sony have never yet made anything that fucking works properly, just crappily made stuff. did the net connection ever work on ps2? do their batteries melt on laptops?

sony are the macdonalds of electronics... there's better out there but kids buy them coz of adverts.

AVOID

Wow product hating at its finest.

I have a 6 year old sony alarm clock where the 8 hour backup battery still runs for 8 hours my ps0ne never broke my ps2 has never broke and the connection woks fine.

DVD Recorder fine Amp fine TV fine yet again. I have never had a sony product go wrong i have had 3 tvs now about 3 dvd players 4 Playstations and about 6 mobiles never has one gone wrong so i say you are wrong and do not avoid.

And i do not buy because of the advert i went because my Cousin had a full entertainment system from Sony that was excelent and had great recomendation from him so i got my first Sony TV and DVD player they never let me down so i stuck with them.

Pure bullshit. ALL my electronics (well, minus PC and old school VHS player) are Sony and they've NEVER broken, they're used every day too. Just because you don't know how to take care of things, doesn't mean you need to tell other people to avoid.

I've had more problems with Panasonic (2nd favourite) than I ever have had with Sony.

Avoid Sharp.

I really do hope the Ps3 doest as poorly as possible. Sony can absorb the losses and actually get it right next time around. Yes i know its sold a fair few so far but those tend to be the ones who enjoy seeing a box with Playstation written on it by their TV.

Weather or not they make a loss on units its an absolute disgrace they charge 50% more in the UK than abroad, for a product 6 months late and with less features. In light of their average launch lineup too (Motorstorm, Resistance all got 80's reviews) theres simply no reason to buy a ps3 over a 360 or wii.

If it truely does way less than expected it will mean Sony actually have to put effort into designing a product that has a place in the consumer market, rather than making a luxury product people will buy down to brand loyalty, Something Sony have played on to sell units rather than having to rely totally on quality. It will also give sony and other console designers a reference of how not to do things in the future.

Again you must think its a disgrace that the 360 and Wii both do the same? the removal of a $13 chip has not made the ps3 price hike and more sensational that what the other two did. This same rubbish gets said all the time but its the same on everything its nothing to do with the PS3.

And the PS3 is still the cheapest Blu-Ray Player on the market. It will sell units because of that. Also the inclusion of the blu-ray has upset a lot of games fans that want to spend £250 on the latest greatest technology. But Sony made the choice to ship games on blu ray because either they wanted to push the technology or they wanted to make sure like the ps2 this consol will still be growing stong in 6 years.

So my way of looking at it. The format war Blu Ray seem to be winning that so if you want a player buy the PS3 alot cheaper than a standalone and you get a free games consol. Or even if its only a games machine if you think it will last 7 years (there is no way of knowing if it will) then its £60 a year thats not much at all is it.

But i have to agree the launch line up is weak they should have made sure MGS or Gran Turismo were ready at launch to show off the consol.

Again i still do not think this is anything new though GoW for me was the first truely great game on the 360 and that was released after a year.

They are :D

...it's just that Sony's so desperate to have at least one smiling face seen next to a POS3 that they've resorted to bribery. Face it, in years to come the development and launch of the POS3 is going to become one of the classic industry cases of 'how to completely fuck up what should have been a sure thing'.

I suppose its a lot down to individual preference then. I for one never owned a Ps2 and one of my main considerations for a ps3 was the backwards compatibility. The drop from 98% to 73% BC is a severe impact on my decision to buy one.

Beyond that the price is a huge factor as for most people, myself included its a lot of money and to be honest with you i couldn't care less for Blu-Ray. Can i also point out that it was NOT required for them to use Blu-ray at all however they decided to because its a Sony Proprietry Format. Your PAYING THEM A PREMIUM to help them get blu-ray players into your homes which in turn drives demand and future profits for them. Your giving them money in 2 ways in effect due to licensing their disc technology. Thats why i find it so amusing when people blinded by Sony loyalty claim Sony are being oh so benevolent in their inclusion of a Blu-Ray player at a loss. They're not stupid :p.

Anyway I do feel PS3 will have a place once Sony reduce the price substantially however success or not i truly hope its a lesson learnt that people aren't complete morons and will wise up to corporate greed and piss poor ability to give customers what they actually want isn't a good business model.

Edit : Such a ranty sounding post. To be fair the ps3 isn't bad, i wouldn't turn down a free one i just fail to see the logic in people ardently defending what ultimately are very few good points for the damn thing atm /rantoff
