OH! MY! GOD! Today I received a phone call from the PRINCIPAL OF RADA to offer me a place on their three year acting course in September! For those who don't know what the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art is, it's the fucking Oxford University of drama schools. World renowned. People come from all over the globe to train at RADA. I'm one of 34 people out of 2,500 applicants to get a place this year. They haven't even auditioned everyone yet and I'm in already! I'm chuffed as a fucking train! :D

I had to do three separate audions, culminating in a full day group workshop a couple of days ago. I'll move to London for September (somewhere, somehow) where I will live in poverty for three years, graduate as a professional actor, then live in poverty for the rest of my life. I couldn't be happier! :D

Oh wow! OH WOW!

And now I have to go back to work.

PS. Anybody want to buy a 1999 Mazda MX-5? Good runner, excellent condition, serviced, tax and MOT 12 months. £7,500 ono. :(

Strong work Robin, I look forward to seeing you in TV dramatisations in no time at all! ;)

And did you take the YMCA logo off of the side of your car before putting it up for sale? That might, y'know, put people off... :)

Wow nice one Summo!

Make the most of it, don't piss the opportunity away by spending your entire time drinking lighter fuel and sleeping in gutters.... hang on, that sounds like fun :D

Wasn't Withnail the alcoholic one who never got any acting jobs and ended up shooting himself with a shotgun filled with wine once 'I' left for his lead part oO ... (Well in the novel that never was anyway :p)

Ps, well done Summo :worthy:, go win an oscar sometime and swear profusely at the acceptance speech.

Bloody Hell Robin, that's amazing news! I'm so pleased for you! Is it going to be chronicly expensive? Are you going to learn fencing? That may sound a bit random but I was talking to an actor the other day and he said they all learnt fencing at drama school. Was RADA the only place you applied to in the end?

Also, I've been meaning to ask you, what am-dram groups did you used to belong to? Or still belong to? I remember you saying there were some really good ones in London, and I have a couple of friends from my drama degree living back in London who want to get back into acting.

Fencing is SUCH a joke. Seriously, it is possibly the most retarded format of 'combat' ever.

When you see it done without all the kit and caboodle, it does look very good indeed. I saw Dangerous Liasons in London, and it had the most storming sword fight at the end.

But then, I really do love sword fights, so this may sway my judgement.

It depends on if you like swords being used in poncy, noneffective ways, or whether you like actual swordsmanship.

I'm rather partial to both. I like all styles of sword fighting really. I'm not a fan of fencing as a sport, but when you see it used in films and drama as an actual sword fight then I like it.

Anyway, it might be a mute point, they might not even teach it anymore.

Speak, Summo!

I did sabre fencing for about 15 years. It isn't even slightly poncy.

But foil fencing is for girls. I have no debate on that part.

Congratulations Robin. My step-son's father went to RADA, actually ended up in stage management, so it doesn't always run on to acting. Waste of time really as he joined the civil service and has been there ever since.

All those years at Barrysworld trying to shrug off the "gay" hairdresser image, and you are now going to be an actor !

Don't know much about swords, but I have sold on some slightly dodgy DVD Players once.

I haven't got a sword but I do have a mighty fine chopper......... :D

.....I'll be leaving now.

/edit: Actually. Fuck leaving - after reading this I realise that my humour isn't the crime against humanity that I think it is:

To be honest, I don't know if they still teach fencing. The prospectus mentions training in "armed and unarmed combat" which I guess includes a bit of thrust and parry - it seems to be traditional. I think fencing is used because it relies so heavily on maintaining eye contact and trying to 'read' your opponent, as well as physical dexterity and discipline. I dunno, I'm already talking like a luvvie...

I did most of my acting at Chelmsford Theatre Workshop over about seven years. I think I've done 22 different plays (including Les Liaisons Dangereuses, in which I did the swordfight at the end!) and the really high quality amateur theatres in the London area are The Questors in Ealing and the Tower Theatre Company in Islington. They're regarded as being the best you can get outside professional theatre, and in many cases they kick pro theatre's arse. I think for both of them you have to audition to be a member, which is how they keep their standards high, I guess.

In the end I applied for Webber Douglas (who offered me a place which I turned down today, heh) and LAMDA (waiting for a final audition date from them, but I'll probably tell them I'm not interested once I get my confirmation letter from RADA).

So looking forward to quitting my job, but have another 4-5 months to go yet. :(

Thanks for the messages everyone! I'm so very very excited.

Anyone have any rooms going near a tube station? :/
